Surgical Services Support Technician (Casual)
Location: UPMC Williamsport
Schedule: Primarily Day/Evening Shift (12:00 PM – 8:30 PM) Availability: One weekly shift on Wednesday or Thursday; additional shifts as needed
Purpose: The Surgical Services Support Technician provides essential support to the surgical team, contributing to patient care and operational efficiency within Surgical Services. This role functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Clinician and involves both direct and indirect patient care responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with patient positioning and transfers in the operating room under RN supervision.
- Transport specimens to the laboratory and assist with opening sterile supplies and equipment.
- Support the care, cleaning, and maintenance of specialty equipment (e.g., lasers, video towers, microscopes).
- Help nurses with instrument tray setup and ordering; coordinate with SPD regarding tray completeness and instrument integrity.
- Communicate effectively with anesthesia and OR staff to prioritize daily assignments.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment, including:
- Performing safety checks
- Cleaning equipment and OR rooms
- Changing bed linens and emptying hampers
- Keeping hallways clear and returning equipment to proper locations
- Perform patient care tasks safely and in accordance with hospital policies.
- Receive and apply feedback constructively; identify learning needs and seek guidance from preceptors.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and standard precautions.
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly to the appropriate department.
- Provide or support patient and family education as needed.
- Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in all duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced surgical environment. Strong communication and organizational skills. Commitment to patient safety and quality care. Willingness to learn and adapt to changing needs within the department.
High school diploma or equivalent with 1 year of experience, preferably within a customer service or healthcare role. OR Enrollment in any healthcare training program that requires clinical rotations with at least 1 clinical rotation completed.
Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
