Deputy Director
The Deputy Director assists the Director in planning, leading, and implementing the policies of the assigned UPMC EMS agency. This role provides strategic and operational support, ensuring the achievement of EMS, Physician Billing, and financial objectives. The Deputy Director acts as second-in-command, stepping in for the Director as needed, and helps drive new business strategies and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Support the Director in reporting to the agency Board of Directors and UPMC Prehospital Leadership on all business operations.
- Assist in overseeing organizational goals, objectives, and strategies.
- Help develop and manage budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Lead or support quality improvement, compliance, and regulatory initiatives.
- Participate in daily and annual fiscal and operational activities.
- Provide leadership and guidance to staff; supervise providers in the field as needed, including shift assignments and resource allocation.
- Respond to mass casualty incidents and coordinate with other agencies under unified command structures.
- Support management team in labor relations and collective bargaining union matters.
- Assist with community outreach and represent the agency in EMS forums, councils, and committees.
- Oversee EMS billing relationships with outside vendors to ensure fiscal results.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Educational and Knowledge Requirements
- Bachelor's degree preferred; minimum 3 years progressive management experience required (EMS experience preferred).
- Exceptional interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, staff, vendors, and community leaders.
- Proven leadership skills in planning, analysis, decision-making, human resources, and financial management.
- Strong oral and written presentation skills.
- Pennsylvania Paramedic or Pennsylvania Prehospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Certification in pertinent specialty areas:
If Paramedic: PA Paramedic certification required/obtained within 6 months; FP-C certification within one year; National Registry certification required.
If Registered Nurse: PA license required/obtained within 6 months; PA DOH PHRN certification required/obtained within 6 months; CFRN certification within one year.
- Certified Medical Transport Executive (CMTE) preferred.
- Additional certifications/licensure as determined by operational needs.
- Driver's License required.
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (within 90 days of hire).
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 (preferred, within 90 days of hire).
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (within 90 days of hire).
- Emergency Service Vehicle Operator preferred.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course, International Trauma Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, or Prehospital Trauma Life Support (within 90 days of hire).
- Act 34 Clearances.
