Technical Services Manager

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Technical Services Manager to partner with researchers and students working on unique projects and novel solutions. You will lead a dynamic and collaborative team across the Technical Support Services (TSS) portfolio.

The Technical Services Manager (TSM) is responsible for managing the Technical Support Services (TSS) Workshop teams that support education and research activities across multiple faculties within the University of Sydney. There are several workshop buildings across campus, providing services such as fabrication, welding, machining, circuit development and assembly and bespoke equipment repair. These Workshops will also assist and advise on the design suitability of bespoke equipment and components to allow for cost and time-efficient manufacture, which might include outsourcing.

The TSM will lead the implementation of TSS strategic objectives, including fostering effective teamwork and synergies between the Workshops' teams, working collaboratively with other TSS Teams across the University to ensure alignment in ways of working, customer service excellence, fostering meaningful relationships and optimising resource utilisation.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide effective leadership, management, delegation, coordination and guidance.
  • Lead the implementation of service improvements, service excellence and operational efficiencies within the TSS Workshops teams.
  • Act as a cohesive link between the work area, other TSS teams, researchers and students, core research facilities, the broader University and external clients.
  • Plan and manage the effective utilisation of resources across the designated technical areas of responsibility.
  • Champion best practice workplace health & safety, compliance, and risk management.
  • Oversee risk management and emergency response.

About you:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering or trade qualification (e.g. machining, fabrication), with extensive experience in managing a diverse range of workshops in a large and complex working environment.
  • Proven experience of managing a medium to large sized team, preferably in a Higher Education/Research Institution.
  • Experience leading a team through organisational change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Relevant experience in managing and forecasting budgets, approving requisitions and overseeing expenditure.
  • Experienced in subtractive manufacturing technologies: Machining/Fabrication (e.g. conventional/CNC machine tools, welding), woodworking.
  • Acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within a workshop environment, including experience in working with, storing, and disposing of hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementing safety procedures relevant to a workshop.
