The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an NSHE Specialist 1 in the Orvis School of Nursing. This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. This position provides essential administrative support to the Office for Research and Innovation (ORI), tenure-track faculty, and visiting scholars at the Orvis School of Nursing (OSN). This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation (ADRI). This role is essential to the school's administrative team and supports various academic and research efforts. The NSHE Specialist works closely with the School's HR and Fiscal Officer, who oversees all personnel and budget matters, to help ensure that operations run smoothly and follow established policies. Beyond research support, this position assists with day-to-day activities across academic, fiscal, and administrative areas. It involves using program-specific knowledge, exercising sound judgment, and helping solve problems within defined procedures. The person in this role helps keep communication flowing across OSN programs, campus community partners, and external/internal stakeholders and maintains consistent operations, aligning with OSN's goals and priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of relevant experience; OR Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of program support experience equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III in Nevada state service which included applying complex laws and regulations, composing written materials, and maintaining records; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with experience supporting academic research or faculty in a university setting, familiarity with NSHE administrative systems, policies, and procedures, working knowledge of pre- and post-award processes, budget management, or HR support functions in a higher education context, and/or demonstrated ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment in seeking guidance or escalating matters to appropriate leadership when necessary are encouraged to apply.

Compensation Grade 31

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
