The University of Manchester Facilities Maintenance and Compliance Unit are seeking to appoint an experienced and visionary Head of Electrical Engineering to play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, resilience, and strategic development of our electrical infrastructure.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional who is passionate about operational excellence, innovation, sustainable engineering and delivering high‑quality services that support a world‑class academic environment.

About the Role

As the Head of Electrical Engineering, you will provide strategic and technical leadership for all electrical engineering activities across our extensive estate. You will be responsible for setting standards, shaping policy, and ensuring compliance across our HV and LV networks, whilst leading a team of skilled engineers and inspectors.

You will also directly influence campus‑wide initiatives, including the implementation of our Zero‑Carbon Masterplan, long‑term maintenance planning, and design governance for new development projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction for electrical engineering design, operation, and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and develop standards, policies, specifications and safe systems of work for electrical infrastructure.
  • Oversee compliance of all HV/LV systems, ensuring statutory and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Lead a team of electrical engineers and inspectors, fostering a culture of excellence and professional development.
  • Commission and interpret electrical condition surveys to shape long‑term investment planning.
  • Offer technical expertise for new construction and refurbishment projects.
  • Support performance monitoring, KPIs, and continuous improvement across the service.
  • Manage delegated budgets and contribute to strategic planning within the Estates & Facilities Directorate.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the University and external bodies.
  • Deputise for senior colleagues when required.

You will join a highly skilled Facilities Maintenance & Compliance team, reporting to the Deputy Associate Director. You will lead a talented group including Senior Electrical Engineer, Electrical Engineers, and Inspectors, contributing to strategic decision‑making and service development across the Directorate.
