Perform core roles in construction and maintenance activities including installation, repair, and maintenance on all Plumbing and HVAC systems on campus. Construction and maintenance repairs must be completed in accordance with building codes.
Installs and maintains all insulation for potable or non-potable water systems (including water mains), sanitary and storm piping, steam and condensate piping in tunnels, buildings, and underground, all heating and cooling piping for HVAC systems, outside of duct work.
Assists and trains apprentices.
Drives and operates service vehicles used for insulation maintenance, installation, or repairs.
Cleans up jobsite upon completion of projects.
Available through callback assignment to respond to emergency work during off-normal working hours to handle problems relating to the building HVAC needs.
Responsible for proper use and care of insulation equipment and tools.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Work is assigned through the Supervisor of Building Craftsperson Work Management Group, Service office, or via the Director of Building Maintenance and Grounds or his Designee in oral or written form. There is very limited supervision provided. The Insulator is responsible for assuring their work is completed properly in accord with statutes and codes in a safe and timely manner. The Insulator is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services. The Insulator must exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
Interacts with Campus Customers, Supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the University campus.
May work in extreme weather conditions.
Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
May work in temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
May work at heights to inspect equipment located on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal-fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.
May be exposed to radiation and chemical fumes, molten lead and welding arcs. Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required when hazards exist.
High school diploma or GED.
A certification of completion of an apprenticeship as a Building Heat/Frost Insulator under the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. OR A current/active journeyman status as a Heat/Frost Insulator.
Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at the time of hire, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position.
Working knowledge of heat transfer, condensation control, and insulation material characteristics.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, schematics, etc.
Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
Possess journeyman-level skills in insulation work.
Ability to take directions both orally and in written form to complete assigned work.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of all insulation work and University Building Standards.
Ability to communicate and sufficient knowledge of trade to assist and train apprentices.
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3056 - Building Heat and Frost Insulator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/27/2025. Starting salary is $42.55/hour.
