The Arizona Transportation Institute (AZTI) is seeking a Research Scientist IV to lead advanced transportation research and manage complex, multi-agency projects funded through the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The position directs technical studies in areas such as intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations, smart mobility, big-data analytics, transportation infrastructure, and transportation safety, while also contributing to competitive proposal development. The Research Scientist IV will serve as a senior technical leader who guides project teams, liaises with ADOT and local agencies, and helps shape AZTI's research portfolio.

Duties & Responsibilities

Research Leadership and Execution

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of AZTI research activities, ensuring tasks are assigned, tracked, and completed across multiple fast-track and small-scale projects.
  • Coordinate with Principal Investigators, university units, and ADOT partners to align project needs, timelines, and deliverable requirements.
  • Review and validate project scopes, work plans, and methodologies to ensure they meet AZTI and ADOT standards.
  • Monitor research compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines, including documentation, reporting, and data handling requirements.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to research teams, graduate students, and support staff, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to project objectives.
  • Prepare and review technical summaries, project updates, and formal communications for internal and external stakeholders.

Project Management

  • Coordinate with Principal Investigators and project managers to monitor budgets, timelines, scopes of work, and deliverables.
  • Track project milestones and ensure timely submission of technical and administrative reports.
  • Review task plans, scopes, and project documentation to support high-quality execution.
  • Plan and facilitate project meetings, workshops, and retreats, including logistics and stakeholder communication.
  • Implement operational plans and process improvements that directly affect project delivery.
  • Work with the Research Program Manager to ensure accurate documentation of project status.

Staff Development & Operational Excellence

  • Serve as a team lead for professional and support staff, providing guidance and oversight on assigned research and administrative activities.
  • Take responsibility for specific operations and research initiatives, exercising independent judgment in day-to-day decisions.
  • Build and deliver training programs to strengthen team competency in research tools, university systems, and operational procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of university processes, policies, and systems to coordinate specialized initiatives and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of all job functions and broad industry best practices, techniques and standards. Exhibits ability to transfer knowledge and application of complex principles, theories and concepts to peers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in working with both technical and non-technical personnel at different levels in the organization.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of grant writing and manuscript preparation.
  • Project Management and exceptional coordination skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in a related discipline required. (Transportation, Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Public Policy)
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in Project Management of Research Projects.
  • PMP Certification.
