The Dining Services Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the preparation, service and clean-up for meals served to residents and staff in the community and other special events. Assists Cook as needed, carries pans, kettles and trays of food to and from work stations, stove and refrigerator. Prepares nourishments according to community procedures. Executes the sanitation process by washing tables and chairs in the dining room; sweeping and mopping the dining room floor as assigned; taking trash to the dumpster; washing dishes and silverware according to dish washing procedures; putting clean dishes and silverware away; assisting with cleaning of equipment and kitchen as assigned; maintaining clean, neat, and orderly work areas. Assists with meal service duties through setting dining room tables for meals; working on meal tray serving line; serving meal trays to residents (waiter style, as needed); checking meal trays for accuracy before they leave the kitchen area; clearing tables of dishes and trash; pushing food carts to appropriate nursing wings; communicating with residents during meal times to enhance homelike dining experience; assisting with clean-up after each meal and preparation for next meal; thinking and acting calmly and logically to meet unusual occurrences of the job without being thrown off stride. Follows all appropriate safety and security guidelines, procedures and protocol for residents in the unit. Maintains appropriate, effective communication with residents, and with residents' family or other significant relationships. Provides all care, treatment and services with appropriate dementia care protocols. Participates in relevant educational and training activities as appropriate. Performs all other duties as assigned or directed.
Accountability, accuracy, communication, oral and written, customer oriented, interpersonal, honesty/integrity are key competencies. Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred. Experience: Six months to one (1) year related experience preferred. Computer skills: Ability to learn basic computer applications. Other requirements include operating mixers, stoves, microwaves, blending equipment, coffee makers, ovens (occasionally), slicer; proficient use of sharp cooking utensils (i.e., knives, etc); ability to understand directions; ability to read, write, understand and speak the English language; ability to multi-task and work with a high degree of flexibility; special care or dementia care employees will have additional training in the care and treatment of dementia residents; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with Dietary Staff, residents, families, and other community staff; adherence to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook.
