Maintenance & Landscape Technician

Under the direct supervision of the Park Manager, this position supports the overall appearance, functionality, and safety of Unicoi State Park & Lodge by performing a variety of landscaping, maintenance, and operational tasks. From daily upkeep of park grounds to assisting with facility maintenance and equipment operations, this role is vital in creating a clean, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for all guests. This role is focusing on maintaining each comfort station and removing all trash throughout the state park.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Respond to guest or staff reports regarding park conditions, facility issues, or maintenance concerns; assess the situation and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment after use to ensure functionality and longevity.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment safely, including during transport of materials (e.g., soil, sand), tree trimming, or other grounds work.
  • Conduct routine inspections and basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; report any issues for repair.
  • Follow all safety and security protocols in accordance with company and environmental standards.
  • Prune trees and shrubs using proper horticultural techniques and safety guidelines.
  • Operate various maintenance equipment such as mowers, blowers, chainsaws, and trimmers.
  • Perform general park upkeep including trash removal and cleaning of day-use restrooms and public areas.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3 to 6 months of relevant landscape, maintenance, or custodial experience preferred.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret basic instructions, forms, and memos.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly using simple language.

Math Skills

  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using U.S. units of money, weight, distance, and volume.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense to follow standard procedures and address routine situations with minimal supervision.

Computer Skills

  • General proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Familiarity with retail or maintenance software is a plus.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, kneel, reach, and use hands and arms.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Visual requirements include close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Moderate noise levels typical of outdoor and maintenance environments.
  • Exposure to:
    • Moving mechanical parts
    • Outdoor weather conditions
    • Fumes, dust, or airborne particles
    • Cleaning agents and potentially caustic materials
