Medical Assistant

This position is part of the medical team and will assist providers with patient care, referral follow-up, pre-authorizations, patient follow-up, and schedule consultations and diagnostic evaluations. This position reports to the nurse manager and works closely with and under the supervision of the registered nurse to assist patients in all aspects of patient care and follow-up. The position is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized work environment, maintaining inventory of supplies in each exam room, and ensuring all equipment is operative. This is an essential position in times of public health emergencies related to the campus and reports daily to campus.

Under general supervision, coordinates the operations of a clinic providing medical and/or research services.

Primary Duties:

  • Under the guidance of the UHC nurses, completes all tasks assigned by providers to facilitate patient care. This includes but is not limited to vital signs, screening medical questions, EKGs, nebulizer treatments, insurance authorizations, referrals, and follow-up calls to patients.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor, is attentive to patient needs and provides excellent customer service with each encounter.
  • Coordinate the operations of the clinical care team by assisting providers with patient care and referral follow-up, pre-authorizations, schedule consultations, and diagnostic evaluations.
  • Provide direct patient care and follow-up, answer phones, schedule appointments, register insurance information, and assist with billing/insurance questions as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies in each exam room, and ensure all equipment is operative. Coordinates facility maintenance and equipment repair.
  • Administer immunizations as assigned. Able to review immunization forms and immunization compliance for completeness.
  • Participates in the identification of issues and problems regarding clinic policies and procedures. Assists in the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Responds to inquiries, orally or in writing, about clinic services.
  • Coordinates scheduling of appointments for consultation, treatment, evaluation, testing, laboratory, or counseling services.
  • Assists in developing brochures, handouts, and other educational or informational materials.
  • Provides excellent customer service, be attentive to patient and visitor needs and inquiries with a non-judgmental attitude and acute awareness of the comfort, safety, and confidentiality of patients.
  • May be required to rotate on weekend shifts and weekday late night clinics to provide patient check-in and assist providers as needed.
  • This is an essential position in times of public health emergencies related to the campus.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Successful completion of an accredited program for Medical Assistants with the credentials of RMA, NCMA, NRCMA, CCMA or CMAA.
  • Required to maintain current certification throughout employment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working as a medical assistant in an ambulatory health care facility.
  • Fundamental knowledge of equipment used as a medical assistant in ambulatory care settings.
  • Able to perform CMA tasks such as EKG, Nebulizer set-up, ear lavage, POCTs, nebulizer administration, etc.
  • Computer skills in common computer applications.
  • Excellent Communications and interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Physical activity includes sitting at a desk, walking up to 150 feet to offices and records rooms, leaning, bending and light lifting. Potential exposure to communicable disease by virtue of working in a health care facility.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Five years performing a full range of clerical support services to include one year coordination work and one year in a medical setting. Comprehensive knowledge of the theory, principles, techniques and practices of the specialty are required.

OTHER: Certifications and/or licensure may be required based on the specialty.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of basic medical terminology and related clinical practices and protocols. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and clients. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to use computers and other standard office equipment. General knowledge of and ability to comply with confidentiality of records and communications regarding patients/clients. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.

Other:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Conditions of Employment:

Employees in this job class must be CPR certified within the first twelve months of employment. Candidates selected for employment may be subjected to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Overtime, weekend, on-call and shift work may be required in some positions.

Salary Range: $20-$25/hr
