Registered Nurse
The Trauma and Burn Service Department scope of service is to provide a professional and supportive trauma and burn care delivery system that assists the patient in achieving and maintaining an optimal level of wellness and health. The Trauma and Burn Service Department's responsibility includes four distinct centers: Level I Trauma Center, Geriatric Trauma (as a subset of the Level I Trauma Center), the Regional Burn Center, and Pediatric Level II Trauma Center. The major services provided include:
- Performance Improvement Patient Safety (PIPS)
- Outreach and Education
- Injury Prevention
- Trauma and Burn Registry
- Emergency Preparedness
The goal of the Trauma and Burn Service Department is to provide oversight and facilitation for optimal care of the injured patient throughout the continuum of care. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently while managing a heavy workload. The ideal candidate must be able to travel up to 50% of the time within the region. The ideal candidate is comfortable with public speaking to small and large groups. He or she must have knowledge in the care of the trauma and burn patient. The ideal candidate is creative and engages multiple teaching strategies in educational and injury prevention activities. The ideal candidate is organized and able manage time and scheduling.

Job Specific Responsibilities
Outreach Activities:
- Certification courses:
- Acts as a coordinator for the certification courses sponsored by UMC (ABLS, ATCN, ATLS, RTTDC)
- Provides oversight and coordination of pre-course activities. Including but not limited to setting dates, obtaining rooms, obtaining instructors, obtaining course materials.
- Ensures course packets are sent timely
- Communication with instructors and course participants
- Timely completion of post-course paperwork and ensure financial documents are completed.
- Acts as an ambassador for UMC during the course
- Evaluates course for opportunities to improve
- Oversees instructor update of new editions
- Provides Professional education to other hospitals and EMS providers that routinely transfers patients to UMC.
- Maintains current knowledge of trauma and burn care
- Utilizes current resources, data, and evidenced based medicine to educate on current state of the art care for the injured patient
- Utilizes a variety of teaching techniques including but not limited to audio visual, PowerPoint, simulation, demonstration, role play etc.
- Keeps a up to date list of requests, prioritizes requests based on geography, budget demands, and need for education
- Documents outreach activities to meet established requirements and guidelines
- Reviews post course evaluations to identify opportunities for improvement
- Completes all financial paperwork timely
- Injury Prevention:
- Utilizes data to determine injury prevention needs.
- Provides a balance of programs representing the patient populations served.
- Trauma: Pediatric
- Trauma: Adult - Geriatric
- Burn: Pediatric and Adult
- Manage SBIRT program: including but not limited to, identification of trauma patients requiring intervention, communicating to SBIRT team the need for intervention, coordinating quarterly meetings, collect and track SBIRT compliance with a goal of >80% compliance.
- Utilizes current resources, data, and evidenced based medicine to provide current state of the art injury prevention activities
- Utilizes a variety of teaching techniques including but not limited to audio visual, PowerPoint, demonstration, role play etc.
- Keeps a up to date list of requests, prioritizes requests based on geography, budget demands, and need for education.
- Documents injury prevention activities to meet established requirements and guidelines.
- Reviews events for opportunities for improvement
- Identifies strategies to measure the effectiveness of the program.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
- Valid Texas Nursing License, Compact Licensure
- Two years clinical experience in trauma / emergency care
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, must be obtained within 3 years.
