Field Support Technician

UIC Science is seeking an on-call Field Support Technician in Atqasuk, Alasak to provide hands-on support for field research and operational activities in remote Arctic environments. The Field Support Technician will assist with preparing, transporting, and maintaining field equipment; collecting samples and data; and supporting logistics for scientific projects. Responsibilities also include ensuring compliance with safety standards, maintaining accurate field records, and working collaboratively with scientists, project staff, and community stakeholders. This position requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in challenging environmental conditions.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include:

• Support UIC Science field operations during peak season.
• Perform maintenance and repair of field equipment and vehicles.
• Provide general support for field research and logistics activities.
• Work collaboratively as part of a team to accomplish project goals.
• Maintain accurate records, logs, and field notes.
• Serve as Bear Guard when required to ensure field team safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support field and research operations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Ability to safely operate ATVs, snowmachines, and trucks in Arctic conditions.
• Familiarity with the land, water, and environment in and around Utqiaġvik, Alaska.
• Strong ability to follow instructions and carry out assigned tasks independently
• Capacity to work effectively as part of a field team in remote locations.
• Attention to detail in maintaining records, equipment, and safety protocols.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Previous maintenance or laborer experience strongly preferred.
• Experience with remote hunting, camping, or working on the ice or land in Arctic conditions.
• Candidates must pass a background check in order to fill this position.
• All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

• US Fish and Wildlife Service Bear Guard certification strongly preferred.

Physical and Mental Demands

• Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds.
• Prolonged standing and walking in field and outdoor environments.
• Ability to twist, bend, squat, and perform other physical movements as required for fieldwork.
• Stamina to work in remote areas for extended periods.
• Mental focus and alertness to follow safety protocols and respond to changing field conditions.

Working Conditions

• Work is primarily performed outdoors in Arctic and remote environments.
• Exposure to extreme cold, wind, snow, rain, and other adverse weather conditions.
• May require travel by ATV, snowmachine, boat, or small aircraft to reach field sites.
• Work may involve irregular hours, extended days, and overnight stays in remote camps.
• Potential exposure to wildlife hazards, including bears, requiring constant awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
