Engineering Associate

The Engineering Associate position at the City of Tucson's Department of Transportation & Mobility Department creates and maintains technical drawings, plans, graphic information links, a physical records room, and a database of records. Conducts research and provides information to constituents and staff.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Transportation Program Coordinator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Creating engineering plans and draft as-built changes on record documents. Creating records of survey and other survey maps. Updating and maintaining right of way maps. Creating other drawings, maps, and details, such as floor plans for real estate.
  • Overseeing the record document (as-built) process for storage of project records on completion, scanning of the record document plans, permanent retention of the plans, and drafting in-house record documents using redlines submitted from contractors and engineering project managers utilizing various software like AutoCAD and Carlson.
  • Maintaining and updating GIS links on MapTucson to database and also maintaining and updating 45 layers on MapTucson.
  • Conducting research, including analysis of survey records and other engineering documents and reading of dockets to determine public right of way. Answering right of way questions by the public and staff.
  • Maintaining right-of-way records for the City of Tucson.
  • Maintaining and updating a storm drain line map layer on MapTucson. This provides approximate location and type of structure in our drainage system, such as location of manholes or size of underground pipe.
  • Doing site visits for drawing measurements and clarification of as-built conditions.
  • Providing customer service in answering questions from the public.
  • Performing other duties and tasks as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include an associate's degree in engineering or related field and two (2) years of directly related experience - computer-aided drafting, geographic information systems, transportation engineering. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. A valid and unrestricted driver license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with databases and GIS applications, preferably ArcGIS. Land surveying work experience.
