Licensed Practical Nurse

Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care across all age groups. As a collaborative member of the healthcare team, the LPN supports the RN in coordinating and delivering patient care, ensuring adherence to nursing philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. This role promotes a safe care environment and demonstrates accountability, growth, and commitment to best patient outcomes and positive experiences for patients, families, and staff.

This position includes full access to medications, with responsibilities involving handling, preparing, and administering medications within the LPN scope of practice.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited LPN program

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current Practical Nurse license in the State of Michigan
  • CPR or BLS certification

Experience:

  • Minimum: Basic clinical and computer skills
  • Preferred: Clinical experience or training in a healthcare setting

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist RN with initial and ongoing patient assessments through observation and data collection
  • Perform delegated tasks including:
    • Venipuncture and blood cultures
    • IV catheter insertion/removal
    • Urinary catheterization
    • Specimen collection and point-of-care testing
    • Basic bedside care and procedures (e.g., ECGs, dressing changes, respiratory care, vital signs)
    • Administer physician-directed treatments
  • Report patient data and observations to RN
  • Document patient information accurately and timely
  • Support implementation and updates to patient care plans
  • Prioritize and organize care delivery based on patient needs
  • Reinforce health teaching and education
  • Administer medications within scope and document per policy (routes include PO, inhaled, topical, rectal, IM, SubQ, and IV flushes with Normal Saline)
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members
  • Assist with discharge planning and safe transition of care
