HR Generalist
The Tla'amin Nation is a modern, forward thinking, self-governing nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region).
Job Type: Full-time, temporary (1 year term)
Hours of Work: Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm
Reporting to: Human Resources Manager
Department: Human Resources
Working with the HR team, the HR Generalist provides overall HR support to employees and managers. The HR Generalist carries out day-to-day activities to support their client group including recruiting, onboarding & orientation, policy administration, employee relations support, health & safety, benefits administration, leave management, and records management. The Human Resources Generalist is a member of Tla'amin Nation's HR team and collaborates with the team to build and strengthen Tla'amin's overall HR program.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla'amin laws, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures as directed by Human Resources Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation.
Recruiting and Onboarding
- Assists with the continuous improvement of Tla'amin Nation's recruiting practices to ensure an effective and efficient process.
- Coordinates recruiting activities, ensuring Tla'amin policies, procedures, and practices are followed throughout the recruiting process. Ensures a positive process for candidates and managers.
- Supports departments by being proactive with recruiting needs and ensuring seasonal and casual staff are in place during peak periods.
- Works with Department Managers to develop/update position descriptions and job postings for approval.
- Works with the hiring manager to determine sourcing strategy and posts positions internally (website, Facebook) and external job posting sites.
- Supports the Hiring Manager and Hiring Panel to shortlist applicants, set up interviews, develop interview questions, and conduct reference checks. Participates as a member of various hiring panels.
- Prepares Offer/Employment Agreement for approval and execution.
- Maintains the tracking spreadsheet for all open positions and communicates regularly with hiring managers on the status of recruiting activities.
- Assists with the continuous improvement of Tla'amin Nation's onboarding and orientation program to welcome new employees and support them through the probation period.
- Works with the hiring manager to set up and ensure a smooth onboarding process for new employees. Meets with new employees to deliver the HR component of the process.
- Checks in with new employees and managers each month during the probation period and reminds managers of probation period milestones.
Employee Relations & Management Support
- Serves as a resource to employees in all aspects of the employment relationship.
- Assists and supports employees with the leave management process.
- Acts as a resource to supervisors and managers regarding policy interpretation and other employment matters, referring complex matters to the Human Resources Manager.
Administration
- Handles HR administration, including benefits administration (enrolments and terminations), leave tracking, paper and digital employee file maintenance, etc.
- Sets up new employees and maintains employee information through the Bamboo HRIS system.
- Works closely with the Payroll team to ensure Payroll has all HR information that connects to pay.
HR Department
- Liaises and works cooperatively with the HR team to ensure department goals are achieved.
- Provides backup to essential functions to other HR team members during a period of vacation or leave.
- Keeps up-to-date with changing employment-related legislation and advances information as required.
Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience
- A post-secondary Certificate or Diploma program in Human Resources Management or related field.
- Minimum 3-4 years of HR experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience in full-cycle recruitment.
- Experience working with a Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and Applicant Tracking System.
- Class 5 Drivers Licence and acceptable Driving Record.
- Acceptable Police Information Check.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of HR best practices and programs.
- Strong knowledge of employment related legislation. Experience working with federal legislation (Canada Labour Code, Canadian Human Rights Act) is an asset.
- Exceptional interpersonal and coaching skills, with the ability to work with staff at all levels and backgrounds and build trusting relationships.
- Ability to deal with sensitive and highly confidential information and situations.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Intermediate to Advanced computer skills in MS Office.
- Experience working with leave management systems and other HR-based technology.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to streamline and continuously improve various HR processes.
- Respect for and a commitment to learn about Tla'amin culture and traditional teachings.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Occasional travel to attend meetings or training is required.
Priority will be given to candidates located within the qathet Region, but applications from candidates located in British Columbia (but outside the qathet Region) will be considered for remote work arrangements.
