Thungela Resources [Thungela means "to ignite" in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

Job Description

As the Principal CI & Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership to Thungela in Electrical and Control & Instrumentation Engineering.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Provide input into the Engineering strategy for the department ensuring alignment with the Thungela strategy
  • Develop and implement strategy for the department including the design and maintenance of systems relevant to the production process in both Electrical and C & I Engineering
  • Develop a planned approach for keeping updated with technical developments and look for ways that these can translated into value for Thungela.
  • Management of processes for ensuring that Thungela is up to date with the current developments in electrical engineering and control and instrumentation technologies
  • Attend applicable conferences, courses, seminars, liaise with peers, build relationships with contractors and give and receive input from the Group Engineering team on standards and specifications
  • Provide technical advice and input on current and new projects to project services as well as ensuring compliance with technical specifications through consulting with project managers and contractors
  • Give advice on costing, capital estimates, safety and project implementation relevant to electrical and control & instrumentation engineering
  • Provide input on design queries and design recommendations to engineering managers and assist with audits on designs when requested to do so as well as conduct audits on contractors' designs and qualify the final product and implement recommendations from peer reviews
  • Ensure compliance with South Africa Energy Strategy ensuring that systems are in place and maintain an energy register
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering Managers, Engineers and other stakeholders to provide technical support and input on electrical engineering and control & instrumentation technologies for current operations
  • Effective Scoping of tender documents and adjudication of tender documents in relation to electrical engineering or control & instrumentation technologies
  • Liaising with external stakeholders such as Eskom and other industry associations such as EIUG
  • Driving the energy and carbon reduction strategy and initiatives

Qualifications

Education:

  • B Tech / BSc in Engineering (NQF Level 7)
  • Advantageous: Post-graduate degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering / Control Systems (NQF Level 8)
  • Advantageous: Management Development Programme or equivalent
  • Advantageous: Safety Course: A3
  • Advantageous: Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA
  • Advantageous: A qualification in Project Management

Experience:

  • Minimum 8-10 years' experience in Electrical Power Engineering or Control & Instrumentation Engineering in a Mining Industry
  • Minimum of 3 years of Senior Management experience in the related discipline
  • Extensive experience as an Electrical Engineer and Senior Instrumentation Technician in a Mining environment
  • Experience as a Professional in Training – Engineering in a Mining environment will be advantageous
  • Solid understanding of the broader mining business
  • Good track record of interfacing with and influencing Managers in other functions

Additional Information

In-depth knowledge of Relevant Legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals and Energy Act

Knowledge of latest technological developments, standards and designs and specifications in Electrical Engineering & Control and Instrumentation

Basic understanding of other Engineering Disciplines, i.e. Instrumentation, Mechanical and Civil Engineering

Knowledge of electrical equipment and systems used in the mining industry

In depth knowledge of and ability to work with computer technology and programmable hardware

In depth expertise in Control and Instrumentation

Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various commodities; Proven planning and control abilities;

Excellent process analysis and planning skills and monitoring and reporting
