Child Development Worker

The role is focused on providing a wholesome, safe, and happy learning environment for all children through modeling the example of Jesus.

Responsible for organizing, planning, and implementing a program that is responsive to the spiritual, social, physical, emotional, educational, and recreational needs of each child under the direction of the Supervisor. Ensure all activities are age appropriate and co-constructed in such a way as to provide an effective and safe learning and development experience for every child while intentionally reflecting the mission.

Accountabilities include:

  • Provides input in planning and assists with the implementation of appropriate age-based activities according to skill and learning levels that promote social interaction and personal development. Assists with teaching age-appropriate Bible Lessons to the children.
  • May assist in orientating new children and families; provides on-going feedback on child's development and behavior.
  • Ensures that all information about children, family, staff, visitors, and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that activity records and statistics are confidentially secured.
  • Assists with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid and completes, reports, and files incident reports as required.

  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
  • Works with the Supervisor to ensure that programs meet contractual, legal, and internal accreditation requirements; ensures full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Works with Supervisor to plan programs and other administration duties as required.

Child Development and Care:

  • Support implementation and evaluation of the age-appropriate programs.
  • Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of children and acceptance of diversity.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with the children.
  • Identify and expand upon learning opportunities (teachable moments).
  • Identify and support child's individual learning and development.
  • Meet health, welfare and safety needs.
  • Implement preventative health and safety measures.
  • Provide first-aid and CPR. Protect children from physical and emotional harm.
  • Implement emergency and evacuation plan.
  • Identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and actively supervise children.
  • Meet nutritional needs.
  • Accommodate for special nutritional requirements. Model and teach proper table manners.
  • Establish with colleagues an environment to foster positive behavior in the program.
  • Guide and observe children. Implement positive behavior guidance.
  • Facilitate appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem-solving, and coping skills.
  • Use and promote active listening skills.

Equipment & Facilities:

  • Develop and maintain a safe environment.
  • Check for physical hazards.
  • Maintain and implement safety standards and protocols.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.

Family and Community Relations:

  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships with families.
  • Advocate for children and families.
  • Provide an inclusive environment.
  • Collaborate with parents to identify strengths, needs, and interests of the child.
  • Record Keeping
  • Attendance at parent meetings, staff meetings, and other job-related activities will be part and parcel of this job description.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility:

  • Reports directly to: Child and Youth Coordinator

Working Conditions:

  • The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children, room set-up, moderate amount of teaching, leading, etc.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college Diploma program of at least one full academic year in Early Childhood Education, from a recognized institution or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
  • Must complete the mandatory provincial curriculum training and hold certification required by the province. (First Aid 20 hours responsible adult certificate)
  • Criminal Record Check for vulnerable sector.
  • Food Safe

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in supervising and implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.

Skills and Capabilities (examples provided below):

  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centers.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.

Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $19.93 to $24.91 with a maximum of $29.89. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
