The Thales Defence Mission Systems Domain is a leading provider of integrated mission solutions to surface ships and submarines, and is the No.1 Naval fleet support and technical services company in Australia. It is also a specialist in the upgrade of naval vessels providing systems and platforms integration capabilities.
The Mechanical Engineer will be part of a diverse team of engineers, technicians, production staff and management involved in the In-Service Support (ISS) of Collins class submarine and more broadly provide project and business operations support to the Undersea Warfare business sector of Under Water Systems in Australia. Specifically, performing engineering related tasks to maintain and support the Scylla sonars and associated equipment and systems.

Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Working with the Scylla ISS Engineering, Towed Array, General Assembly, Acoustics, Maintenance and Repair teams to deliver and maintain equipment and systems including engineering calculations, developing assembly, repair and test techniques, sourcing of alternates to obsolete parts and materials, and testing to appropriate engineering specifications.
- The design of new components for equipment and systems or test fixtures.
- Undertaking Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on location or on components returned from site.
- Creating, reviewing and maintaining design and manufacturing documentation such as: specifications, compliance matrices, design calculations, analysis reports, drawings, test plans, and test reports.
- Documenting all engineering support and investigation work to a high standard and utilising the peer review process.
- Ensuring the quality and configuration control of produced design, manufacturing and test data.
- Participating in design reviews, test readiness reviews and production readiness reviews.
- Developing and maintaining clear plans for assigned work packages, including routine status reporting and revised estimates to complete.
- Proactively participating in the continuous improvement of Lean systems and processes within the Engineering group.
- Acquiring and maintaining technical knowledge across all the Scylla subsystems, including the outboard and inboard components, associated maintenance / test equipment and manufacturing processes.
Key Knowledge and Experience:
- IEAust recognised Mechatronic / Mechanical Engineering degree able to meet the requirements for Professional membership of Engineers Australia.
- A working knowledge of drafting practice and relevant Australian standards.
- A working knowledge of Inventor CAD or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years experience working 'hands on' as part of a team to manufacture and/or support high quality technical equipment or systems.
- Must have a flexible attitude, be willing to develop new skills and work as part of a team.
- Good knowledge of engineering design, verification and configuration processes.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good initiative, self-management and planning skills.
