Section Chief

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Section Chief, a first level supervisor providing planning, directing, organizing, and exercising control over nonsupervisory employees assigned to designated civilian classification team within a Field Operating Agency. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the assigned classification team, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and meeting customer needs. The role also involves exercising supervisory personnel management responsibilities, representing the Air Force Central Classification in meetings and briefings, and participating in special agency projects and initiatives with Air Force impact.

Requirements include meeting the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, 0201 Series. Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Knowledge of the full range of federal classification and federal personnel management laws, executive orders, functions, theories, and techniques and the interrelationship of the various personnel disciplines is required. Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of the agency's, management's, and installation's objectives, missions, and operating programs and the implications on command and/or agency personnel management programs and organizations. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization through subordinate supervisors. Ability to analyze, plan, and adjust work operations of one or more organizational segments to meet program requirements and objectives within available resources. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures. Ability to represent the organization effectively, both orally and in writing, in working out solutions to problems or questions relating to work and in presenting controversial findings and to gain support for program goals.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
