Senior Social Worker

The Senior Social Worker supports caregivers, Veterans, and their families throughout the Medical Center and community. They play a key role in developing and implementing the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC), establishing methods to measure the effectiveness of social work practices and services. Through outcome evaluations, they continuously improve treatment services and drive system enhancements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Caregiver Support Program
  • Ensuring compliance and collaboration with local facility and VA Central Office Caregiver Support Program initiatives
  • Providing leadership, direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, staff development, and continuing education programs
  • Serving on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility, VISN, and national level or in the community
  • Developing and facilitating caregiver support groups and educational programs
  • Participating in direct caregiver and Veteran contacts to assess caregiver stress/burden and the development/application of directed clinical treatment interventions
  • Providing caregiver and family clinical interventions to facilitate the treatment of caregiver stress, psychiatric illness, emotional distress, and social needs
  • Conducting regular home visits to Veterans and Caregivers participating in the PCAFC
  • Assisting in coordinating events and programs for the annual National Family Caregivers Month in November
  • Assisting program leadership in maintaining a data monitoring system to measure the efficacy of the program

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Requirements:

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

To qualify for the assignment of Senior Social Worker at the GS-12 level, you must have 2 years of experience at the advanced practice level, earning while having an active, unrestricted advanced practice license in a U.S. state or territory other than Alabama.

Physical Requirements:

Light Lifting (15 lbs. occasionally); Light Carrying (16 lbs. occasionally); Reaching above shoulder; frequent keyboarding; Walking (up to 6 hours); Standing (up to 6 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2-4 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Correctable near sited and far sited Vision 20/30; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted).

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
