Lead Medical Support Assistant

The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant in the Care in the Community Section (CITC), Department of Veterans Affairs, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. The Lead MSAs provide vital coverage to various wards throughout TVHS in the event of calls out and short staffing. The Lead MSA acts as a point person for training, questions, service level advocacy and much more all while assisting the chief of ward administration.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordination of Advanced MSA assignments and workflow found in an interdisciplinary unit.
  • Daily workload assessments, assigning work, and assuring proper staffing coverage.
  • Evaluating training records and determining training needs of MSAs to provide support across interdisciplinary settings.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments.
  • Providing guidance to staff members, to include changes in policies and procedures.
  • Creating and maintaining employee work schedules.
  • Acting as a liaison among Advanced MSA staff, patients, and other interdisciplinary staff to resolve day-to-day conflicts.

Requirements include:

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Experience or education in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 (AMSA) grade level.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and clinical flow processes.
  • Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems.
  • Skill in communicating and coordinating with interdisciplinary care team staff.
  • Ability to manage staffing requirements and adjust the flow of work.

Physical requirements include operating a computer terminal and managing multiple activities at one time. The work environment may be stressful due to the accelerated pace during peak clinic hours.

There is no education substitution for experience at this grade level. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
