Environmental Services Technician

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services e.g., textile distribution and inventory activity, sanitizing and disinfecting, waste removal, cleaning of blinds, washing windows and walls, discharge cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing and extracting, polishing floors and applying floor finishes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performs the full range of cleaning tasks requiring use of powered cleaning equipment.
  • Uses cleaning chemicals.
  • Makes beds, changes linens, collects soiled linens, delivers clean linen and supplies.
  • Removes, transports, repackages, disposes and stores general waste, regulated medical waste, chemotherapeutic waste, and radioactive waste.
  • Checks and replenishes consumable supplies in the course of cleaning and servicing rooms and areas within the Medical Center.
  • Removes, transports, repackages, disposes and stores sharps as part of service rendered to clinics in patient rooms, and may replace filled sharps containers with empty containers.

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and weekends.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Suitable for federal employment, determined by a background investigation.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Selective Services Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.

Working Conditions: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstances as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretions are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders, or when using power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
