This position is located in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) of the Veterans Healthcare System in Johnson City, TN. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing tasks associated with the EMS goals and objectives. Responsibilities include assigning staff for duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis; coordinating work with supervisors of other services within the assigned area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities; cleaning all patient areas and corridor spaces throughout the medical center, operating rooms, and all other areas as assigned; ensuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules; planning and scheduling daily and weekly assignments; training staff to ensure the use of patient centered care principles; providing on-the job training for subordinates and new employees; keeping subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; controlling the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit; conducting in-use testing of equipment and/or supplies; ensuring all safety regulations and procedures are observed; supervising the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to the designated areas and persons; approving leave requests for subordinates, counseling employees, and recommending disciplinary action; making formal appraisals of subordinates works performance and conduct; inspecting assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner; performing related duties as required.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. Physical Effort: This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Approximately 40 percent of time spent standing, 40 percent of time spent walking and 20 percent of time spent sitting. Hearing and visual acuity. Manual dexterity to use a phone and operate equipment. Working Conditions: The work is accomplished in a variety of different areas including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards and other public, recreational and administrative areas. Protective clothing and personnel protective equipment (PPE) is required in the accomplishment of some aspects of the work. There is the potential for exposure to strong cleaning solutions, bodily fluids and communicable disease. The work can involve occupied patient rooms and interaction with both medical and psychiatric patients. May be required to work inside and outside. May require some exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals.
