Elevator Service Helper

The primary responsibility of the Elevator Service Helper is to assist the Elevator Service mechanic to inspect, maintain, adjust, and repair passenger and freight elevators, platform lifts, conveyors, dumbwaiters, and auxiliary mechanical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Service, inspect, maintain, adjust, and repair passenger, residential, and freight elevator systems, platform lifts, conveyors, dumbwaiters, and auxiliary mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect electrical control and signal systems, wiring connections, control panels, hoisting mechanisms and cables, motors, guide rails, brakes, doors, and safety devices to assure continued safe operations.
  • Locate malfunctions and determine causes of problems in brakes, motors, switches, and signal control systems using test lamps, ammeters, and voltmeters.
  • Adjust safety controls, counterweights, door mechanisms, and other mechanical and electrical components and their control systems to ensure control specifications are met.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including lubricating and cleaning all moving parts (such as fly-ball governors, pulleys, and runners; overhauls and cleans governors, and hoists).
  • Vacuum and clean solid state boards; clean and replace capacitors, coils, contacts, brushers, relays, switches, pneumatic timers, solenoids, runners, and elevator doors.
  • Disassemble defective units and repair or replace parts (ie. locks, gears, cables, electric wiring, and faulty safety devices).
  • Overhaul mechanical auxiliary equipment.
  • Repair electrical circuitry.
  • Re-rope and re-write the elevator systems as required.
  • Remove and reinstall various sizes of motors, machines, generators, and various other components.
  • Maintain log books that detail all repairs and checks performed.
  • Rescue passengers trapped in elevators.
  • Participate in additional training to keep skills up to date.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to carry out each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of work experience using various hand and power tools. Knowledge of laws, rules, and standards pertaining to elevator maintenance and repair required.
  • Language Ability: Effectively and proficiently communicate in both oral and written form with employees, clients, vendors, and management. Must be able to understand and follow verbal instructions.
  • Computer and Office Skills: Experience with PC platforms and knowledge of e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets. Technical and functional knowledge of all company specific software programs.
  • Personal Skills: Ability to interface with employees, clients, vendors, and management. Good time management skills ability to prioritize duties, and attention to detail. Regular and predictable attendance. Must be able to work independently and get along with others.

  • The employee will regularly talk, hear, drive, and operate mechanical equipment.
  • Frequently the employee will sit; stand; reach with their hands/arms; and be subject to repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.
  • Continually, the employee will walk, climb, push, stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl; climb or balance; and move up or down from/to a sitting position to the floor.
  • The employee will regularly access elevator pits and machine rooms by ladder or by stairs and will be called upon to climb flights of stairs up to 20 stories.
  • Occasionally the employee will work in confined spaces, work in high dangerous places, and in risk of electrical shock.
  • Visual activities include clarity of vision at twenty (20) feet or more, clarity of vision at twenty (20) inches or less, three-dimensional vision - ability to judge distance and space relationships, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • The employee will regularly lift up to thirty (30) pounds. Frequently the employee will lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift over one hundred (100) pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

  • The employee will regularly drive to multiple client locations each day.
  • The employee will be exposed to dust, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, cramped quarters, and inadequate lighting.
