Customer Service Supervisor-Convenience Center

The Customer Service Supervisor-Convenience Center oversees the daily operations of a Metro Nashville Convenience facility. The incumbent ensures compliance with environmental and safety regulations, manages staff performance, directs proper waste and recycling disposal, and coordinates administrative functions to maintain efficient operations.

Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.

Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.

Typical Duties

Operational Duties:

  • Oversee daily site operations, ensuring the facility opens and closes on schedule.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local solid waste and recycling ordinances.
  • Inspect incoming waste for hazardous or restricted materials and direct patrons to proper disposal areas.
  • Operate and supervise the use of heavy equipment, including compactors, balers, and backhoes.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and enforce safety protocols, including proper use of PPE.
  • Coordinate waste and recycling pickups; arrange for equipment servicing and repairs.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the facility grounds.

Administrative Duties:

  • Schedule staff, delegate workloads, and oversee personnel needs.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate employee performance.
  • Manage staff timesheets, attendance, and payroll records.
  • Prepare and submit operational and incident reports as required.
  • Communicate effectively with the public to resolve complaints, provide information, and ensure excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and eight (8) years of experience in customer service. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience (1:1 ratio)

LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid Drivers License

All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in solid waste and operations management or a related field and at least one year in a supervisory role.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, public administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge with waste disposal regulations, recycling processes, and equipment operation/maintenance.
