Engineer I

Under general supervision provide engineering support to the Building and Zoning Department. Responsibilities may include reviewing development plans submitted for consideration by the Maury County Regional Planning Commission (MCRPC), review plat submittals, establish surety amounts for road development, inspect subdivision road construction, provide assistance in setting MCRPC agenda and staff comments on submittals, and providing technical knowledge to County staff.

Essential Job Duties

Functions in Support of the MCRPC:

  • Review plans and documents submitted for consideration by the MCRPC and/or the Building and Zoning Office.
  • Prepare staff comments and correspondence related to submittals and inquiries.
  • Prepare routine and periodic amendments to the Zoning Resolution and Subdivision Regulations.
  • Make recommendations regarding day-to-day inquiries regarding the Zoning Resolution, Subdivision Regulations, planning considerations, general engineering, and the application process.
  • Prepare information to be presented to the MCRCP.
  • Attend scheduled monthly regular meetings of the MCRCP or as required by the Director.

Subdivision Inspection Program:

  • Coordination of the Subdivision Inspection Program, including pre-construction meetings with the developer and developers engineer and contractor.
  • Prepare pre-construction meeting documents.
  • Review inspection reports provided by outside inspection services consulting firm.
  • Interpret Subdivision Regulations.
  • Interpret, review, and approve Construction Plans.
  • Coordinate with developers and developers consultants on subdivision road inspections.
  • Calculate surety amounts for subdivision infrastructure construction.
  • Present information to the MCRPC.
  • Review Revisions of Subdivision Construction Plans.

Comprehensive or Major Planning and Regulatory Updating:

  • Assist with complete comprehensive rewriting and updating of both the Zoning Resolution and Subdivision Regulations into new integrated documents.
  • Attend meetings and hearings as required.

Performs other job duties as assigned.

Primary challenges of this position include prioritizing work in a complex project driven environment.

General office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, etc. Motor vehicle.

Basic knowledge of engineering terminology, principles, and theories. Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Knowledge of project management and administrative principles and practices. Knowledge of civil engineering practices and procedures. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to: Stand, Walk, Sit, Use hands to finger, handle, or feel, Reach with hands and arms, Talk or hear, Lift equipment up to and occasionally in excess of 20 pounds.

Work is typically performed in an office environment with minimal exposure to the outside elements.

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of Bachelors degree from a four-year college or university in civil engineering or related discipline plus 2 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Certifications/Licenses: TN Drivers License Practicing Engineer
