Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and record the maintenance in the PMS Sertica. The maintenance procedures of the main engines, power generation plants, and auxiliary equipment and systems must be followed according to SERTICA and covers the mechanical equipment inside and outside the engine room.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Supervise engine room operations, ensuring compliance with operational procedures, safety standards, and maintenance requirements established by the company.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective technical maintenance work on the vessel, ensuring that planned maintenance system work orders are executed and reported in accordance with requirements.
  • Efficiently manage the vessel's systems, including fuel, lubrication, coolants, fresh water, and refrigeration within the tugboat.
  • Maintain efficient use of onboard materials, such as consumables, spare parts, tools, fuel, and lubricants.
  • Responsible for loading and transferring fuel and lubricants, strictly following company procedures.
  • Handle electrical connection procedures in normal and emergency modes, the fire detection and extinguishing system, and damage control and bilge systems.
  • Immediately inform the Captain of any unsafe, non-compliant, or conflicting technical situation requiring critical action.
  • Keep the defect list for the assigned vessel up to date, ensuring constant follow-up on open technical issues.
  • Create detailed reports in Sertica linked to requisitions, with immediate actions to prevent incidents or accidents affecting equipment, the vessel, crew, or the environment.
  • Close reported defects in Sertica with the correct actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Update operating hour counters in Sertica at least three times per week.
  • Supervise maintenance and repair tasks carried out onboard by third parties.
  • Assist the Fleet Superintendent in managing all technical activities related to the vessel and provide timely, accurate information. Immediately report any developments that could jeopardize the vessel's operability and/or critical components.
  • Participate in internal audits required by the technical management, as necessary.
  • Manage the inventory of tools and consumables, verifying the efficiency of requested resources and placing material orders as needed for the work.
  • Assist with deck operational tasks as required by the Captain.
  • Handle emergency shutdown and restart procedures for critical equipment.
  • Accurately record data in the engine logbook and oil record book.
  • Perform other ad hoc tasks as necessary.

Requirements/Preferred:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Technical degree in Industrial Mechanic, Diesel/Hydraulic or related fields, preferable.

Training and competencies:

  • More than 2 years of experience in similar position, preferable.
  • Capacity to perform level I maintenance to the equipment's.
  • Basic knowledge in: multimeter use, fuel and water probe use, amount of fuel and water calculation, appropriate use of paints, oils analysis, use of heat gun, manometers, and thermometers reading.
  • Fluent written and spoken Spanish. Intermediate written and spoken English preferred.
  • Safety environment awareness.
