Senior Operations Advisor

Join our dynamic In-Situ organization as a Senior Operations Advisor, where you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of major projects through operational excellence. Reporting to the Manager of In-Situ Major Projects, you will lead Operational Readiness efforts using a comprehensive Ready for Operations (RFO) framework, ensuring seamless integration from project planning to operational handover.

Your initial focus will be on the Firebag NCG Project, which includes Sulphur Recovery and Sour Gas Processing—critical components in our energy portfolio. This is a high-impact role that requires strategic thinking, technical expertise, and strong stakeholder engagement across multidisciplinary teams. You will apply Suncor's OEMS processes and provide oversight and guidance throughout all phases of Major Project development, ensuring alignment with organizational goals from initial planning and execution through to the final handover to Operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 7–10 years of experience with a preference for Sour Gas Processing and Field Gathering experiences.
  • A background in supporting or leading Readiness for Operations (RFO) activities on Capital Projects, Commissioning and Start-up, or other relevant experiences.
  • Strong understanding of asset lifecycle management, Operational integration, and business readiness principles.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and translate it into actionable Operational plans.
  • Comfortable working in cross-functional teams and leading through influence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • High Capital Major Project support with a focus on Operations, Maintenance, Technical, and Reliability deliverables.
  • Lead Operational Readiness by ensuring smooth handover from Major Projects to Operations within the Integrated Team through Operational Readiness Checkpoints (ORCs).
  • Deliver on RFO deliverables using planning tools and best practices within the Develop and Manage Projects (D&MP) OEMS process.
  • Interface with Engineering Providers and project stakeholders to meet desired project outcomes.
  • Interface and engage with the various Production Unit teams to ensure alignment on project scope, expectations, and final deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the Commissioning and Start-up (C&SU) team to meet all Ready for Operation (RFO) deliverables including Operations Procedures and Training Plans.
  • Develop and manage Ready for Operations (RFO) Plans and resource strategies across project stages.
  • Provide feedback on schedule, resource plans, and risk identification.
  • Identify and help implement new cost-effective alternatives (instrumentation, control valves, mechanical devices) while ensuring minimal impacts to operability and maintainability.
  • All Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Detailed Engineering (DE) work will be Calgary based with some travel to the Firebag facility. During Commissioning & Start-up (CSU) and Ready for Operations (RFO) phases, position will transition to the Firebag site as the key point of contact.
  • Split time between Calgary and Firebag site, transitioning to site during later project phases.

Location and other Key Details:

  • This position is based out of Calgary main office however will share split time between Calgary and our Firebag (on-site) location.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday when in Calgary. Firebag site hours will be dependent on shift schedule based on site requirements.
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work.
