Senior Hardware Engineer, Drive-by-Wire Systems

Stack is developing revolutionary AI and advanced autonomous systems designed to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency of modern operations. Stack's autonomous technology incorporates cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and cloud technologies, empowering us to create innovative solutions that address the needs and challenges of the dynamic trucking transportation industry. With decades of experience creating and deploying real world systems for demanding environments, the Stack team is dedicated to developing an autonomous solution ecosystem tailored to the trucking industry's unique demands.

The Hardware Engineering team is responsible for the engineering, manufacturing and testing of the entire autonomous vehicle from components to vehicles. This includes the base vehicle platform as well as the individual modules comprising Stack's Automated Driving System.

As a drive-by-wire hardware engineer, you will interact with members of the hardware, systems, firmware, motion control, and other teams to collaboratively build up Stack's drive-by-wire integration on new vehicle platforms and new systems. This includes ownership of the steering, braking and engine controls in autonomous vehicles. You will also be responsible for supporting existing platforms and systems, and working with external suppliers as needed.

This position is located in Pittsburgh, PA with the expectations around the role requiring regular onsite presence at our New Stanton, PA site. This position will also require some infrequent travel to partner sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage and coordinate with drive-by-wire hardware suppliers on technical content and discussions.
  • Work under the mentorship and support of experienced engineers to perform hands-on testing, bring-up, debug, and characterization.
  • Develop and test proof-of-concept drive-by-wire control scripts.
  • Support system actuator characterization and safety case progression efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or higher with a major in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, vehicle engineering, computer science, or other related majors.
  • 2+ years of experience in software/firmware programming with CAN buses.
  • Familiarity with CAN bus programming (including J1939), tracing, and debugging with Python and Vector tools strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with automotive hardware development and drive-by-wire systems integration strongly preferred including heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical systems in automotive or robotics applications. ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle experience preferred.
  • Experienced in reviewing technical datasheets, system descriptions, DBC and documentation.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
