Solarvest, a leader in Malaysia's renewable energy sector, seeks an electrical-focused Battery Engineer to drive the development, deployment, and optimization of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role is critical for integrating BESS with solar PV plants and ensuring reliable grid support. You will provide technical expertise in electrical design, commissioning, and performance management of BESS projects across Malaysia.
Key Responsibilities
1. BESS Electrical Design & Integration
- Design and validate electrical architectures for grid-scale BESS (DC-coupled, AC-coupled, HV/MV systems).
- Size and specify critical components: PCS (Power Conversion Systems), transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and cabling.
- Ensure compliance with Malaysian grid codes (GCP, MS IEC standards) and international norms (IEEE 1547, IEC 62933).
- Model system performance (e.g., using ETAP, PSCAD) for grid stability, fault response, and power quality.
2. Commissioning & Field Execution
- Lead on-site commissioning of BESS systems, including FAT/SAT (Factory/Site Acceptance Testing).
- Troubleshoot electrical issues: grounding, insulation resistance, relay coordination, arc-flash safety.
- Supervise contractor work for electrical installations, ensuring compliance with design specs.
3. Performance Monitoring & Optimization
- Develop BESS control strategies for grid services: peak shaving, frequency regulation, solar smoothing.
- Analyze SCADA/EMS data to diagnose efficiency losses, thermal issues, or degradation.
- Optimize system performance for revenue stacking (energy arbitrage, ancillary services).
4. Technical Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare electrical schematics, SLDs, protection coordination studies, and HAZOP reports.
- Ensure adherence to Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) regulations and local safety laws.
- Support project permitting and grid interconnection applications.
5. Vendor & Stakeholder Management
- Evaluate BESS integrators, PCS suppliers, and balance-of-plant contractors.
- Collaborate with solar PV teams for hybrid plant design.
- Provide technical support to EPC, O&M, and business development teams.
6. Safety & Reliability
- Implement HV safety protocols (PTW, LOTO) during commissioning/maintenance.
- Conduct root-cause analysis for electrical failures or safety incidents.
- Define maintenance procedures for electrical components.
