This position is responsible for the design, development, verification, and validation of new products from concept through design transfer/production using the process and tools identified in the S&N Sports Medicine Quality System related to design controls. This position is expected to function in a leadership role on a design team and will provide mentoring to lower-level engineers.

What will you be doing?

  1. Act as the technical lead on a new product development project team.
  2. Primary responsibilities include concept development, prototyping, product design, verification/validation testing including authorship of protocols and reports, and support through production scale up.
  3. Create and maintain design control related documentation such as risk and usability assessments, user needs, design inputs, etc. Comply with requirements of design controls and other regulatory bodies.
  4. Design products in conjunction with the manufacturing engineering/external supplier groups in order to deliver a design that is manufacturable.
  5. Develops and validates biomechanical and mechanical test methodologies to evaluate sports medicine repair devices both in development and currently on the market.
  6. Will meet with customers (sales, marketing, surgeons) to observe surgery and build understanding of user needs.
  7. Discloses inventions for patent application and supports their prosecution.
  8. Will support Marketing/Sales with competitive product analysis and performance testing.

What will you need to be successful?

  • BS in engineering or science or related field 8+ years of related experience required
  • MS in engineering or science or in a related field 5+ years of related experience preferred
  • Works independently with little to no guidance.
  • Provides innovative solutions to complex problems, serves as best practice resource within and outside discipline, may lead functional teams or projects.
  • Exercises judgment using specialized depth and breadth of expertise. Decisions are guided by existing policies and procedures with minimal to no guidance from the manager.
  • Applies broad perspective and recommends solutions and best practices.

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $145,250 - $217,750 USD annually. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
