Senior Software Engineer (Ruby)

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong Ruby expertise to join our Bobby Tables team and help scale our Reporting product. You'll design and build high-impact data aggregation and reporting systems used by 90% of our customers.

About the Team...

Bobby Tables is dedicated to building a reliable reporting ecosystem. Our data service, a core part of the Smartly AI-powered advertising platform, integrates diverse data sources so clients can analyze campaign performance through our intuitive report builder and visualizer.

The customer-facing interface to our online analytical processing (OLAP) system is accessed by most of our customers and powers campaign management and optimization features. On the backend, we tackle large-scale databases (several terabytes), complex queries via a REST API, and collaboration with multiple stakeholders. Our data structures have grown from single-channel to cross-channel. With a 99.95% uptime SLO, we use best practices in change management to remain a stable data source for internal and external customers.

• Backend: Ruby, PostgreSQL, Redis
• Complementary tools: TypeScript (Node.js), React - you'll collaborate with these, no need to be an expert
• Infra: AWS, Kubernetes (where relevant)

As a Senior Software Engineer, You Will...

• Lead development of reliable backend services in Ruby and PostgreSQL
• Empower Smartly teams by making reporting and integration solutions more self-sufficient
• Build tools that enable seamless data exchange and report generation
• Improve data visualization within the Smartly product
• Support teams in using our framework effectively and gather feedback for future improvements
• Enhance and maintain our Reporting engine across backend and frontend
• Collaborate with designers, engineers, and product managers to deliver solutions

What We're Looking For...

• 5+ years of experience building scalable distributed systems
• Strong backend expertise in Ruby
• Proficiency in SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL strongly preferred)
• Experience with large-scale data processing and performance optimization
• Ability to take initiative, lead improvements, and mentor others
• Currently based in Helsinki and able to work in-office three days per week
• Curiosity or some experience with TypeScript or React to complement backend expertise
