Shift: Variable 12 hours - 1:00PM to 1:30AM

Job Description

Patient Population: The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors, and the general public.

Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, the Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) performs individually assigned patient care activities based upon established patient care policies and procedures. Specific areas of responsibility include: monitoring of patient vital signs, providing patient hygiene and comfort measures, assisting with medical procedures, fulfilling nutritional needs, Phlebotomy procedures, wound care and splinting, EKG's, unit secretary functions, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) functions, work relating to lab specimens (collection and delivery), and maintenance of a record of the care provided as assigned. Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act. (Gov't. Code ยงยง 3100, 3102) Needs to recognize that they have an affirmative duty and responsibility for reporting perceived misconduct, including actual or potential violations of laws, regulations, policies, procedures, or this organization's standards/code of conduct. The employee shall work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines; and the incumbent shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.

Must have and maintain current licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) with phlebotomy certification or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the state of California. Must have and maintain BLS Card, required.

Must have and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification or obtain within one year of assignment to department.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Ability to speak English, write legibly, and read, understand and follow directions.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as metric system proportions and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

Licensure/Certifications: An individual must have and maintain current licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) with Phlebotomy certification or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the state of California. Must have and maintain BLS Card, required. Must have and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification required.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Cooperates in team planning and execution of that plan to accomplish assigned patient care tasks effectively and safely.
  • Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs. Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
  • Assists in patient ambulation and positioning using safe body mechanics, i.e. patient from bed to standing position or chair.
  • Assists with basic care needs as directed by the RN within the scope of practice.
  • Provides equipment and supplies for patient, room or procedure as directed, i.e. makes beds, stocks supply carts, passes fresh water for patients, stocks soiled utility room, etc.
  • Obtains, prepares and/or transports specimens to Lab ensuring proper Lab slips are included, i.e. S&A, urine, stool.
  • Monitors and documents patient care as directed. Reports variances immediately to appropriate health team member. Reports any patient concerns or changes in patient conditions to the R.N. as soon as possible.
  • Demonstrates proper Infection Prevention skills to include Standardized Protocols or procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the RN such as splinting, point of care (POC) testing, IV removal, and any other function determined by California scope of practice and training.
  • Performs other unit-specific duties; assists with daily supply count and assists Unit Clerk by assembling the patient record.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify and anticipate patient needs.
  • Interacts with patients to determine individual needs and coordinates with R.N. to accomplish. Communicates with Nurse pertinent patient information throughout shift via patient requests and documents appropriately.
  • Participates in adherence to the Joint Commission "National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals" as defined by Scope of Practice.
  • Documentation reflects compliance with established Hospital policies and procedures.
