Funeral Attendant

A Funeral Attendant reports to the Location Manager and is responsible for assisting with all funeral home and cremation related duties. Other general duties include meeting the general public, answering questions and providing information on funeral and cremation information and other related topics, answering phones courteously and in a polite manner, assisting on funeral, memorial and other services or ceremonies as requested by funeral home clients and management. Attendance at monthly staff meeting is expected.

The Funeral Attendant duties must be performed consistent with company mission and values and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities of the position include:

• Preparing funeral services, including the arrangement and delivery of flowers, casket, urn, photos or other keepsakes of client families, as well as the proper care and storage of these items.
• Preparing all necessary documents for services, cremations, and maintenance as directed by management.
• Respectfully preparing the remains of deceased, including dressing and lifting the deceased, or operating the crematory, as permitted by law and in keeping with company regulations.
• Washing and cleaning all funeral home vehicles and other client vehicles as required.
• Performing office duties such as operating fax machine, computer, multiline phone system, debit card machine, typewriter, postage meter and scale and stereo/video system as required.
• Running errands such as for floral delivery, picking up of supplies, documents, etc.
• Answering phones.
• Ushering people, parking cars, and fulfilling any transportation requirements.
• Driving Funeral Home vehicles for services and picking up families.
• Ensuring refreshments are available (where allowed by law).
• Any other duties as directed by management.

Minimum requirements include:

• Equivalent to high school education and completion of a diploma training program at a college or technical school specializing in funeral service or experience equivalent.
• Funeral industry experience would also be a plus.
• Previous customer service and/or sales experience would be a definite asset.
• Knowledge of computers and some software would be an asset, or willingness to learn.
• High level of compassion and integrity.
• Good communication skills.
• Problem solving skills.
• Professional and team player.

Work conditions include:

• Work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions.
• Limited amount of local and/or multiple location traveling required.
• Professional dress is required when in contact with families.

Work postures include:

• Frequent, continuous periods of time standing, up to 6 hours per day.
• Sitting continuously for many hours per day, up to 6 hours per day.
• Climbing stairs to access buildings frequently.

Physical demands include:

• Physical effort requiring manual dexterity is required, includes paperwork, calculators, computers and phone usage.

Work hours include:

• Working beyond "standard" hours as the need arises.
