Job Overview

The Senate Sergeant at Arms (SAA) is currently seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Service Worker Driver available within the Printing, Graphics, and Direct Mail team (PGDM). In this role, you will be responsible for the timely pickup and delivery of supplies, publications, materials, and equipment. Your duties will include maintaining both manual and computerized records, handling forms and work orders, loading and unloading trucks, and transporting IT equipment, office furniture, consumable supplies, historical documents, and artifacts for Senate offices, both on and off the Senate campus. Additionally, you will perform inventory checks as necessary and ensure the proper storage and retrieval of items, moving and stocking supplies and materials in shelves, bins, and other designated storage areas.

This is a full-time position primarily based at PGDM's Capitol Hill Logistics and Operations facility. However, the incumbent may also be required to provide support to the team at PGDM's Senate Support Facility (SSF) in Landover, MD during peak workload periods or to accommodate staffing changes as needed. This role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., as well as engage in pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, kneeling, and entering and exiting a vehicle. The position involves driving a large, loaded truck or vehicle through congested traffic, particularly around Capitol Hill.

Your responsibilities will extend to conducting inventories, staging, organizing, receiving, decommissioning, recycling, and disposing of items throughout the Senate complex. You will also be responsible for daily tracking of warehouse deliveries, activities, and statistics related to user requests. Key Accountabilities/Essential Job Duties

Tracks and logs items; completes and records work orders and other record-keeping forms; operates a computer to access files; maintains manual and computerized records. Picks up and delivers materials, supplies, reports, documents, furniture, and office equipment throughout and also away from the Senate campus. Transports materials, supplies, reports, documents, furniture, and office equipment; operates motorized truck or other vehicle, and power and hand equipment; maintains daily vehicle inspection report. Performs inventory checks as necessary. Assists with workload in the Packaging & Flag area. Stores and retrieves items in and from proper locations; moves and stocks supplies and materials on shelves, in bins and other storage areas. Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

Required Education: High school diploma (or GED).

  • At least two years of experience driving oversized delivery trucks to deliver materials, preferably including the operation of fork-lifts.

Required Special Skills/Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, procedures and functions.
  • Knowledge of office equipment, computers and relevant software/Web applications, and spreadsheets and databases.
  • Knowledge of alpha/numeric methods used to store items.
  • Physical strength, agility, and dexterity required to perform the work.
  • Ability to safely operate a fork-lift, delivery truck, and other vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to learn traffic routes and the location of governmental buildings and installations in and around the Washington, D.C. area in confined spaces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Possession of valid driver's license for at least three years and a good driving record.
  • This position may require the incumbent to be available for sudden recall in response to emergency events affecting the Senate campus/community, which may include after-hour or weekend work, and to potentially deploy to alternate sites in support of the Senate's contingency operations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Valid Forklift Certification with a commitment to maintaining certification.
  • Proficiency in processing inventory requests with a focus on accuracy and efficiency.
  • Familiarity with various shipping methods to facilitate effective coordination of deliveries.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with team members and clients.
  • Basic computer skills for maintaining records and tracking inventory.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed indoors and/or outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Work requires frequent physical effort such as walking, sitting, climbing, bending, standing, safely lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds, and pushing and pulling crates or cartons of supplies.
  • Work also requires physical dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, and body in the operation of hand and motorized equipment.
  • Work exposes the employees to noise. Protective equipment such as steel-toed shoes and gloves may be required.
  • Work requires employees to wearing uniforms.

Conditions of Employment

To be employed by a Senate employing office in a paid position in the continental United States an individual must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B);
  • Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
  • Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law).
