Duties/Responsibilities
Ensure that families are informed of charity care programs at the hospital and assist families with completion of the application for those programs prior to arrival for services
Screens patients for government funding sources and arranges payment options with patients' families as well as private insurance utilizing On-Point and Federal Marketplace
Greet and provides assistance to visitors and patients. Explain policies and procedures, and resolves problems
Verify insurance coverage and update the billing system to reflect the insurance status of the patient as needed
Analyze insurance coverage and benefits for service to ensure timely reimbursement
Ensure that prior authorizations are obtained based on insurance plan contracts and guidelines as requested by the patient family
Respond to requests from families/insurance companies regarding service cost estimates
Enter and update physician referrals as required
Determine availability of third party sponsorship for uninsured families and process patients in accordance with policy and procedure
Explain bills, statements and any other patient correspondence as they relate to the hospital's financial assistance policies
Calculate and post cash payments appropriately for patients as needed
Perform other duties necessary to ensure all accounts are processed accurately and efficiently and patient/family needs are met
Gather necessary documentation to support proper handling of inquiries and complaints
Develops process improvement initiatives to increase the number of families served by our financial assistance program
Assists with the development of meaningful, relevant, measurable goals for departmental operation
Assists with the development of the departmental plan which is: based on an ongoing evaluation of clinic operation; efficient and effective in the use of resources and in meeting patient/family needs; appropriate to the scope and level of care required by the patients served; timely and designed to be responsive to the needs and expectations of patients/families; and commensurate with the organization's primary functions, mission, values and goals
Coordinates and integrates inter and intra-departmental services
Demonstrates effective human resource management skills for the attainment of departmental and hospital goals according to the mission and vision of the organization
Recruits and selects appropriate staff based on the department and hospital needs
Identifies staff development needs and provides appropriate opportunities for staff development and growth
Monitors and evaluates individual staff performance on an ongoing, equitable and consistent basis
Feedback, counseling and/or coaching is conducted in a timely manner, as appropriate
Fosters communication between and among individuals and components of the organization by coordinating internal activities
Provides adequate time for staff to participate in performance improvement activities
Assures competencies of staff are documented and that staffing assignments are commensurate with current skills
Coordinates the orientation of staff to department
Assures that staff is oriented properly, effectively and in a timely manner
Proper documentation of orientation activities are maintained in the personnel file
Assures a safe environment for staff, patients/families and visitors through frequent rounds and assuring staff competency related to their jobs
Assigns departmental coverage as needed
Responsible for initiating and completing monthly departmental statistics
Objectively evaluates staffing requirements and provides input to the annual operating budget
Effectively manages resources to stay within budget
Assists with the annual budget preparation and development for the Family Services department
Communicates effectively with all staff, patients/families, visitors, etc.
Promotes and role models appropriate interpersonal skills including effective leadership, conflict resolution, team building and meeting skills
Communicates with manager, staff, physicians, patients, parents, other departments, etc, in an effective, assertive and positive manner
Keeps staff informed of significant changes and events through regularly scheduled meetings and individual conferences
Required Skills/Abilities
Work requires knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally required through a high school education, with some postsecondary education
Bachelor degree preferred
Two to five years of experience working in hospital patient access and/or billing, physician office billing and collections, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
