Job Summary

Responsible for leading and contributing to cutting-edge research projects that advance medical knowledge and support the development of innovative healthcare technologies by designing, implementing, and optimizing experimental setups, as well as collaborating with researchers, physicians, and other interdisciplinary teams.

Essential Functions

  • Lead research projects, collaborating with principal investigators and research teams to define project objectives, milestones, and timelines.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, and researchers involved in the projects.
  • Design, develop, and optimize experimental setups and devices that address specific research questions and support data collection and analysis.
  • Implement data acquisition systems and software for experimental data collection and analysis.
  • Collaborate with researchers to process and interpret data, applying statistical methods and engineering tools to draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Collaborate with physicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals to integrate engineering solutions into medical research and healthcare applications.
  • Develop prototypes and conduct validation studies to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and safety of engineered systems and devices.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree Biomedical Engineering required or Master's Degree Related Field of Study required or Doctorate Related Field of Study preferred. Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No

Licenses and Credentials: Experience Research Engineering Experience 3-5 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Strong understanding of engineering principles and their application to medical research and healthcare technologies. - Familiarity with medical device regulations and quality assurance practices is advantageous. - Proficiency in engineering software, data analysis tools, and programming languages relevant to research. - Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in a hospital and research setting. - Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to apply innovative solutions to research challenges.

The Senior Research Engineer will work within the fabrication team, which includes mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, imaging specialists, and micro/nanofabrication experts. Work will encompass the design, fabrication, and testing of medical devices, with a strong emphasis on novel drug delivery systems. This includes hands-on microfabrication, 3D printing (SLA and FDM), CNC milling, injection molding, laser micromachining, and other fabrication/testing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Work with postdocs to design prototype medical devices and drug delivery systems
  • Operate and maintain mechanical fabrication/testing equipment
  • Formulate and perform chemical/mechanical characterization of polymeric materials for drug delivery
  • Execute statistical analysis of experiments
  • Summarize and document research results/findings

Additional Senior Research Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Lead project planning and coordination across multiple device development programs, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met
  • Oversee training and onboarding of new team members in fabrication, safety protocols, and experimental best practices
  • Develop and implement advanced fabrication workflows, integrating new manufacturing technologies into lab processes
  • Support publication and grant proposal preparation with technical input, design schematics, and preliminary data generation

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Pursuing a research position post-graduation from a B.S or M.S., or equivalent in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field; 3-5 years of relevant experience. An ideal candidate will have a research background in biomedical engineering as well as hands-on experience/rapid prototyping skills, but training to gain further skills will be available. Candidates with relevant experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • B.S. or M.S. (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, with at least 6 months of relevant experience (co-op/internships considered)
  • Research background in biomedical engineering and hands-on prototyping skills
  • CAD/CAM proficiency (SolidWorks or Fusion360)
  • Biomedical device design and development experience
  • Material characterization skills (biomaterials/plastics, Instron testing)
  • Additive manufacturing (FDM and SLA)
  • Subtractive manufacturing (manual and CNC machining)
  • Plastic injection molding (extrusion, injection molding, compression molding)
  • Strong documentation and SOP-writing skills
  • Preferred: Drug delivery/pharmaceutical sciences, microfabrication, Matlab/Arduino programming

Candidate must have self-motivation and willingness to learn new tools and techniques; strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; comfort summarizing and reporting results to interdisciplinary researchers; commitment to exceeding standards and producing accurate, high-quality work; meticulous attention to detail; practiced documentation skills; and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
