Staff Software Engineer, AI

SafeRide Health is transforming access to care for America's most vulnerable populations. We deliver technology-driven solutions that modernize non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT), improving member experience and health outcomes. As a Staff Software Engineer, AI, you will serve as a technical leader driving the design and delivery of AI-powered product experiences and platforms across the SafeRide ecosystem. You will set architectural direction, elevate engineering standards, and partner with product and data science to ship secure, reliable, and scalable software in a regulated environment. This role requires ownership of complex, cross-cutting initiatives from core services and data/ML integrations to polished user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture and implementation for AI-enabled capabilities (member chat/IVR, dispatch optimization, provider quality signals, fraud/waste/abuse detection, internal operator tooling), balancing reliability, cost, and speed.
  • Design and evolve model-backed systems (LLMs, RAG, classification/ranking, speech/ASR) with evaluation harnesses, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop flows.
  • Establish engineering best practices for AI in production: prompt/version management, feature flags, offline/online evaluation, shadow testing, red-teaming, and observability.
  • Define data contracts and collaborate with data teams on feature stores, lineage, retention, and PHI/PII access controls; improve data quality through validation and monitoring.
  • Build secure, scalable APIs and event-driven microservices; drive performance tuning, resiliency patterns, and capacity planning.
  • Implement polished, accessible front-end experiences (React/Next.js); set performance budgets and accessibility standards.
  • Instrument systems end-to-end with metrics, logs, and traces; design dashboards/alerts and run experiments (A/B and interleaving).
  • Champion privacy, security, and compliance (HIPAA); partner with InfoSec/Legal on threat modeling and responsible AI safeguards.
  • Mentor senior engineers, lead design reviews and RFCs, elevate SDLC practices (testing strategy, CI/CD, deploy safety), and contribute to hiring loops.
  • Own operational excellence for critical services: define SLOs/SLIs, lead incident response and postmortems, and drive systemic fixes to reduce toil.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial time building and operating distributed systems and modern web applications.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex, multi-team initiatives; ability to decompose ambiguous problems and deliver incremental value quickly.
  • Deep proficiency in at least two of: TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Go, or Java; strong system design and code quality skills.
  • Hands-on experience shipping AI/ML-backed products (LLM APIs/SDKs, RAG, embeddings/vector databases) with rigorous evaluation and observability.
  • Expertise building RESTful/GraphQL APIs, event-driven systems (queues/pub-sub/WebSockets), and microservices on a major cloud (AWS preferred).
  • Strong data fundamentals (relational databases, caching, streaming) with pragmatic data modeling and quality practices.
  • Operational excellence in CI/CD, containerization (Docker), infrastructure-as-code, metrics/logging/tracing, on-call leadership, and cost/performance management.
  • Security mindset with authentication/authorization, secrets management, least-privilege access, and PHI/PII handling.
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills; ability to influence architecture and product direction across functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS experience (ECS/Fargate/Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS/Kinesis, CloudFront), Terraform, and serverless patterns.
  • Familiarity with vector databases (pgvector, Pinecone), feature stores, and ML platforms (Databricks/MLflow, Vertex AI/AWS Bedrock/Azure OpenAI).
  • Background in logistics/marketplaces, contact-center systems, routing/optimization (OR), speech/ASR, or reinforcement learning.

Benefits

  • Full medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Flexible PTO and paid parental leave
  • Home office equipment stipend
  • Mission-driven team committed to transforming healthcare access
