RWWA

An Australian organization responsible for the regulation and supervision of racing, wagering, and gaming activities in Western Australia.

Cyber Security Engineering Team Lead

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is at the heart of WA's racing and wagering industries. As a government trading enterprise, we regulate and develop the State's racing sector and operate the TAB – a multifaceted wagering business with a presence across more than 300 retail outlets and a growing digital platform. Our work protects the integrity of racing and wagering, strengthens industry sustainability, and delivers value to the WA community. We are proud to be an organisation driven by our values of Respect, Accountability, Connection, and Excellence.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Cyber Security Engineering Team Lead to join our Technology Division. This is a newly created role, reflecting our commitment to strengthening cyber resilience across RWWA's technology environment. Reporting to the Head of Cyber Security, you will lead a small team to design, implement, and maintain secure systems and platforms that underpin our operations. You will oversee the delivery of preventative and detective controls, system hardening, cloud security, and secure-by-design practices, ensuring alignment with frameworks such as NIST CSF 2.0, and the WA Government Cyber Security Policy. This hands-on leadership role blends technical expertise with solution ownership and collaboration across multiple teams, ensuring sustainable, secure outcomes for RWWA's digital assets. In this pivotal role, you will:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of security controls across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Oversee the engineering and integration of platforms for vulnerability management, identity and access governance, security monitoring, and threat detection and response.
  • Embed secure-by-design principles into architectures, solution reviews, and project delivery.
  • Drive automation and integration across security platforms to increase efficiency, scalability, and risk reduction.
  • Conduct technical risk assessments and ensure alignment with organisational and regulatory frameworks.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small team, fostering a culture of learning, accountability, and collaboration.

You are a cyber security professional with strong technical expertise, able to work hands-on with systems while also providing guidance to a small team. You bring a balance of practical problem-solving and strategic thinking, ensuring security enables the business while addressing an evolving threat landscape. In this role, you will bring:

  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and managing security controls across cloud (AWS, Azure) and on-premises environments, with strong capability in identity and application security.
  • Technical expertise with platforms for threat detection and response (SIEM, XDR), identity and access management (IAM, PIM, PAM), vulnerability management, and secure network access (ZTNA, VPN), including the ability to configure, integrate, and optimise them.
  • Strong working knowledge of recognised frameworks such as NIST CSF 2.0, with the ability to apply them in daily engineering practice and decision-making.
  • A track record of embedding secure-by-design principles into solution architectures, from concept through delivery and ongoing operation.
  • Experience leading and developing a small technical team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Industry experience in cyber security, with the ability to demonstrate leadership and technical depth. A tertiary qualification in information technology or cyber security, and/or relevant professional certifications, will be highly regarded.

At RWWA, we are building a modern cyber security capability to protect the systems and services that underpin our operations. This newly created role offers the opportunity to shape how security is engineered, influence our approach, and see your work make a meaningful impact on the organisation. You'll join a team where your expertise is valued, your input helps guide decisions, and your professional growth is supported. We foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that values practical outcomes and continuous improvement. We offer:

  • Real influence – shape the direction of our security engineering capability from the ground up.
  • Flexibility that works for you – hybrid work options, flexible hours, and the tools to work effectively anywhere.
  • Investment in your growth – a personal learning & development budget, and access to cutting-edge tools and training.
  • A workplace built for people – brand-new offices with wellness spaces, end-of-trip facilities, and modern collaborative zones.
  • Recognition that matters – competitive remuneration, employee discounts, and reward programs that celebrate your achievements.
  • Purpose and pride – play a pivotal role in safeguarding an organisation with deep roots in the WA community.
