Junior Safety Engineer

We're building the UK's next generation engineering powerhouse, providing critical technology that strengthens national security and resilience. At Rowden, we design and integrate advanced systems that sense, connect, and protect data in challenging environments where quick decisions are vital. Our solutions use intelligent automation to enhance speed and efficiency and are built to be reliable and straightforward for critical operations in remote or high-pressure settings.

Headquartered in Bristol (UK), we combine modern engineering methods with cutting-edge commercial technology to create adaptable, mission-critical systems. We focus on solving the tough challenges that others overlook, ensuring our customers can operate effectively in an ever-changing world.

We're growing our in-house compliance and assurance team and looking for a high-potential early-career Junior Safety Engineer to help deliver exciting projects into the hands of our customers. You'll work directly with Systems Engineers, Software Engineers, Infrastructure Engineers, and Product Owners to ensure the products and systems we design are safe, dependable, and compliant with relevant standards. You'll have the opportunity to shape the design and development of safety activities across the full project cycle, by supporting the planning, analysis, and documentation - from requirements and design through to integration, verification, and validation.

We're seeking someone with a strong technical foundation who is eager to develop their skills in safety engineering and assurance. While previous experience in safety engineering isn't essential, you should demonstrate genuine curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. This role is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated early-career engineer to build a foundation in safety and assurance, contribute to meaningful projects, and develop towards a more senior role within Rowden's growing compliance and assurance team.

Key Areas Of Responsibility

As a Junior Safety Engineer at Rowden, you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the delivery of safety engineering work packages, using appropriate tools and frameworks (e.g. JIRA, risk registers, hazard logs).
  • Assisting in the implementation of safety engineering methodologies, including FMEA, HAZID, and GSN.
  • Contributing to safety documentation (Safety Management Plans, Safety Case Reports, Compliance Reviews) ensuring deliverables are clear, complete, and aligned with project milestones.
  • Helping to maintain assurance artefacts such as evidence sets, hazard logs, risk registers, legislation compliance assessments and hazardous materials registers.
  • Supporting assurance reviews, audits, and compliance checks across multiple projects.
  • Engaging with both external and internal teams to ensure consistent, high-quality safety practices.
  • Actively pursue professional development to progress towards senior assurance responsibilities.

Key Skills, Experience, And Behaviours

Key skills, experience, and behaviours:

  • A background in an engineering, technical or scientific discipline.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including report writing and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to work proactively and autonomously towards agreed deadlines.
  • Experience of adopting new IT tools and proficiency in using Microsoft Office.
  • Attention to detail, critical analysis and problem-solving abilities.

Desirable skills:

  • Awareness of a typical safety engineering lifecycle (e.g. DEF-STAN 00-56, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, ARP4754A)
  • Experience (academic or practical) in hazard identification and risk analysis techniques.
  • Experience working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Awareness of environmental or quality management systems.
  • Familiarity with government or defence engineering practices.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about ensuring the equipment we deliver to frontline users is safe and reliable. While you'll gain plenty of experience in this role, you should already have:

  • A pragmatic and common-sense approach.
  • A customer- and user-focused mindset with excellent communication skills.
  • A desire to learn continuously and develop across multiple assurance domains, flexible to business-needs.
  • The confidence working independently as well as part of a team.
  • The confidence to ask questions and challenge when appropriate.
  • A willingness to perform repetitive tasks to meet project goals.
