Food Services Specialist

The Food Services Specialist plays a vital role in reStart Inc.'s mission by ensuring that nutritious, high-quality meals are prepared and served in a safe, respectful, and trauma-informed environment. This hybrid position combines the responsibilities of a Cook and Dishwasher, supporting both meal preparation and sanitation. The Specialist works collaboratively with the Food Services Manager, team members, and volunteers to maintain smooth kitchen operations, uphold food safety standards, and contribute to an overall positive dining experience for participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve hot and cold meals in accordance with established menus, recipes, and service schedules.
  • Accurately weigh, measure, and portion ingredients to maintain consistency and meet nutritional standards.
  • Support menu planning and contribute feedback on meal preparation efficiency and participant preferences.
  • Ensure timely meal service that fosters a respectful and welcoming dining experience for all participants.
  • Wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, utensils, pots, and pans according to safety and health standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen surfaces, floors, appliances, and storage areas throughout the day.
  • Sweep and mop floors to prevent slips and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Take out trash and manage recycling as needed, maintaining compliance with city and health regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to all Kansas City Health Department food handling and sanitation guidelines.
  • Assist in receiving food and supply deliveries, verifying quality and accuracy of orders.
  • Store ingredients and supplies properly, ensuring appropriate temperature and rotation using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method.
  • Report shortages, overstock, or equipment malfunctions promptly to the Food Services Manager.
  • Support inventory management by assisting with restocking and labeling.
  • Work as part of a collaborative kitchen team to ensure daily operational success.
  • Support and provide direction to community service workers and volunteers to ensure safe and productive participation in kitchen activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and respect in all interactions with participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the department's mission and goals.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Basic knowledge of food preparation, meal service, and sanitation procedures.
  • Experience in large-scale or institutional kitchen operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with commercial kitchen tools, equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to interact respectfully with a diverse range of participants and team members.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Food Handler's Permit through the Kansas City Health Department.
  • Ability to meet physical demands, including bending, stooping, walking, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Work Schedule

This is a part-time position with a schedule based on operational needs, typically during meal service hours. Some flexibility may be required, including occasional weekends or holidays, to ensure adequate coverage and meal service continuity.
