Principal Software Engineer

Red Hat's Data and AI organization is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join our team in Bangalore, India. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and evolution of production-grade software systems that incorporate AI capabilities into enterprise data platforms and internal applications. This position emphasizes strong software engineering leadership, with the application of modern AI technologies such as large language models (LLMs), AI APIs, and intelligent automation frameworks to enhance platform capabilities. You will help architect and build scalable services, APIs, and reusable frameworks that enable teams across the organization to develop AI-enabled applications and workflows. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy building robust distributed systems and integrating AI capabilities into software platforms, rather than developing or training machine learning models.

What You Will Do

1. Lead the design and development of scalable backend services, APIs, and distributed systems supporting enterprise data platforms.
2. Architect and implement AI-enabled capabilities, including LLM integrations, intelligent automation, and AI-assisted workflows.
3. Build reusable platform services and engineering frameworks that enable teams to incorporate AI capabilities into their applications.
4. Collaborate with data engineers, platform engineers, and product teams to integrate AI-powered functionality into enterprise systems.
5. Define architecture patterns, best practices, and engineering standards for AI-enabled software systems.
6. Ensure reliability, scalability, performance, and observability through strong engineering and operational practices.
7. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers and guide complex design decisions.
8. Identify opportunities where AI can enhance platform intelligence, automation, and developer productivity.

What You Will Bring

1. Strong experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems and backend services.
2. Deep expertise in software architecture, system design, and scalable platform development.
3. Proficiency in Python, Java, or similar programming languages.
4. Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production applications using APIs and modern AI services.
5. Strong experience building APIs, microservices, and cloud-native application platforms.
6. Ability to lead technical design discussions and mentor engineering teams.
7. Excellent collaboration skills working across engineering, platform, and data teams.

Nice to Have

1. Exposure to modern data platforms (e.g., Snowflake).
2. Experience with cloud-native platforms such as Kubernetes or OpenShift.
3. Experience building developer platforms, internal engineering frameworks, or platform services.
