Senior Backend Software Engineer (Java, AWS, Terraform)

Strategic senior software engineering role in the insurance industry focused on backend development using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS. Contribute to digital transformation initiatives in a hybrid work environment with a product-driven, agile team. Office presence in Markham required three days a week.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services with emphasis on high availability, performance, and security.
• Build secure RESTful APIs to support frontend applications and external integrations.
• Develop microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
• Automate provisioning of cloud resources using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform and AWS.
• Integrate IaC into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitHub Actions.
• Review and create system, software, and functional design specifications.
• Lead product development through research, planning, and collaboration with engineers and product leads.
• Participate in code reviews and ensure code quality, unit testing, and adherence to security standards.
• Mentor team members and promote engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with business goals.

What you will need to succeed:

• University degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
• 5+ years of professional experience in backend development, including 2+ years in a senior role.
• Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
• Proven experience in developing REST APIs and web services.
• Solid background in system integration and software design.
• Proficient with relational and document databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
• Hands-on experience with AWS and Terraform for cloud infrastructure automation.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins and GitHub Actions.
• Comfortable working within Agile development environments.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Insurance industry experience is considered an asset.
