The Hardware Engineering team leads the design, development and production of mechanical hardware at Raytheon. We use state-of-the-art tools, processes, technology, and CORE/Lean principles. Mechanical Engineering’s capabilities encompass a broad range of technical disciplines which include engineering, product development, manufacturing, technical services, materials, processes, analysis, test and documentation.
The Precision Control Actuation Systems (PCAS) department, part of the Hardware Engineering functional organization, is a team of approximately 145 engineers based in Tucson, AZ, and Huntsville, AL. PCAS specializes in developing advanced Control Actuation Systems (CAS), including Aerodynamic Tail Fin and Canard Steering Control Sections, Thrust Vector, Attitude, and Divert Control Systems, as well as Control Surface and Wing Deployment Mechanisms, Stage Separation solutions, Nosecone Ejection Systems, and more. Our work focuses on delivering reliable, affordable and innovative product solutions for land, air, sea, and space.
The Precision Control Actuation Systems (PCAS) department is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Section Leader with experience in CAS hardware development to join our team in Tucson, AZ.
What You Will Do
- Lead a team of approximately 15 engineering project leaders, providing technical and programmatic oversight for the design and development of innovative Control Actuation Systems (CAS). The Section Leader will play a critical role in driving execution excellence, fostering team growth, and ensuring program success across all phases of development.
- You will be responsible for Integrated Product Team Leadership (IPTL) functions, including planning, execution, earned value management (CAM), reporting, resource allocation, and risk management.
- You will work collaboratively with program chief engineers, program managers, supply chain professionals, suppliers, operations, quality, and other engineering disciplines to meet program objectives. Additionally, you will support proposal activities, coach and mentor team members, and align staffing needs to program requirements.
- Drive excellence in program execution, ensuring the successful delivery of CAS development programs through effective planning, resource management, and risk mitigation.
- Act as the primary liaison between section members, functional leadership, and the programs they support, ensuring alignment of technical and programmatic goals.
- Oversee technical and programmatic aspects of CAS development, including design, analysis, testing, and documentation.
- Lead proposal development efforts, including preparing cost estimates (ROMs), Basis of Estimates (BOEs), project plans, and technology maturity roadmaps.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including supply chain, operations, and quality, to ensure seamless program execution.
- Apply mechanical engineering expertise to solve complex design challenges and make data-driven technical decisions.
- Monitor program budgets, schedules, and performance metrics to ensure adherence to objectives and deliverables.
- Serve as a mentor and coach to team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, including performance appraisals, salary planning, and manpower planning.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations
- Ten (10) or more years of engineering experience in systems, electrical, or mechanical design, with a preference for CAS development across all phases.
- Prior leadership experience in roles such as Execution Lead, IPT Lead, Project Manager, or Program Manager.
- Experience with Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
Qualifications We Prefer
- M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related science degree
- Ability to quickly build collaborative networks, empower employees, lead and motivate teams, and foster effective collaboration
- Proven ability to manage multiple and competing priorities
- Proven advocate for process improvement methodologies (e.g., CMMI, Six Sigma, CORE), team building, and effective partnership with internal resources.
- Experience in technical and cost proposal development, technical risk management, and managing cost and schedule requirements
- Strong presentation and technical writing skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Cost Account Manager experience
- Program Management certification or experience
