Senior Principal Systems Engineer

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Principal Systems Engineer to act as a Systems Engineering lead for the Enduring Open Systems Solutions (EOSS) Products Team located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This organization is responsible for leading system development of next generation Open System Architecture solutions which include open standards compliant modularity products and the ability to rapidly deploy new mission critical capabilities to the warfighter. As part of Collins Mission Systems, we specialize in developing advanced communications systems, ground and flight computers, sensors, cyber and software solutions, as well as providing integration of Mission Systems. The candidate will have unique opportunities to work directly with our military customers, engineering and program management teams and hardware and software engineers that are leading experts in their fields.
As a Systems Lead, you will be tasked with leading teams executing full product development cycles from requirements distillation and definition through product design and acceptance. Successful candidates will be responsible for performing under limited supervision all tasks normally associated with the System Engineering discipline as well as providing effective leadership for a team of System Engineers.
What You Will Do
- Serve as the primary technology and systems engineering focal point driving System engineering practices across multiple teams.
- Lead defining system design requirements, including derived requirements, from customers.
- Oversee and guide technical direction to understand, analyze, and develop the models, requirements, and designs using enterprise standard tools, processes, and industry best practices.
- Support engineering teams in the development of test & integration plans, procedures and generation of test flow diagrams.
- Lead integration, verification, and validation tasks and activities.
- Conduct performance analyses and simulations as needed.
- Interact with multidisciplinary teams to achieve full product design (including hardware, software and firmware engineering).
- Prepare presentations and brief to customers during program design reviews.
- Manage problems and issues requiring detailed information gathering, analysis, and investigation.
- Coach, review, and delegate work to lower-level professionals.
- Travel up to 10% as required by the business.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance is required prior to start date.
- Experience in leading a team/mentoring in requirements development and system architecture.
- Participation in large-scale test and integration activities.
- Experience in requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, DNG) or equivalent.
- Experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (e.g., SysML, Cameo, Rhapsody).
- Experience in capturing customer requirements, operations concept development, deriving and tracing system and sub-system requirements.
Qualifications We Prefer
- Understanding of Systems Engineering support for Software, Hardware, and Firmware development and collaboration.
- Proficiency in modeling/simulation tools (e.g., Matlab).
- Comfort in interacting and engaging directly with customers and external business partners.
- Familiarity with qualification processes and certification procedures.
- Experience or exposure to leading team with applications such as Microsoft Project, Confluence/JIRA.
- Effective communication skills with all levels of management, program team members, and external stakeholders.
- Agile experience as a Scrum Master, Product Owner, or other Agile leadership roles.
- Competence in peer review processes, configuration, and change management.
- Experience conducting root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Understanding of military concepts of operations or radio performance standards.
- Familiarity with design to cost / design for manufacturing methods and experience transitioning product to factory production.
- Existing Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.
