Principal Electrical Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated Principal Electrical Engineer to join the Computing Products Hardware Department within the Displays, Computing & Networking Directorate. Our team develops advanced hardware solutions for a wide range of military platforms, including tankers, transport aircraft, and helicopters. This role supports all phases of the hardware development lifecycle—program pursuit, requirements capture, design, integration, verification, and factory transition.

The selected candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, including Systems, Software, Mechanical, Environmental Effects, Manufacturing/Operations, and Design-to-Cost teams, to ensure all product requirements are successfully achieved. Strong expertise in high-speed digital circuit board design, EMI control, manufacturability, testability, and thermal management is essential.

What You Will Do:

  • Mission computers
  • Small form factor Multi-Function Displays
  • Data Transfer Units and Network Attached Storage
  • Processing resources (PowerPC, Intel, and ARM processors)
  • Avionics I/O (Ethernet, ARINC 429, MIL-STD 1553, PCIe)

The candidate is expected to contribute throughout the full product development cycle in the following areas:

  • Top level hardware product design and requirements capture
  • Development and verification of digital and mixed signal hardware designs
  • Oversight of Printed Wire Board (PWB) layout
  • Integration and design verification
  • Support to qualification and factory transition
  • 10% travel as needed.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with standard lab equipment.
  • Experience with PWB layout.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and independently on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work with systems and subsystems groups to determine meaningful and testable requirements for the design.
  • PWB layout of PCI express
  • Processor board (PPC, Intel, and ARM) design
  • 2D and 3D graphics engines
  • Video interfaces (SMPTE, ARINC 818)
  • Lighting protection circuits and testing
  • Hardware and RTOS integration
  • Fiber optic transceivers
  • DO-160 or MIL-STD-810/MIL-STD-461 qualification
  • FPGA development
