Principal Electrical Design Engineer

We are searching for a Principal Electrical Design Engineer to design and develop electric power distribution systems. In this role, you will apply engineering principles to meet specifications and customer requirements, coordinating with cross-functional teams on all design phases, managing engineering documentation, overseeing testing and qualification, and supporting system entry into service. This role offers the chance to shape critical aerospace systems while contributing to excellence in strategic planning and engineering.
What You Will Do
- Apply Collins Aerospace hardware-specific processes and standard work to ensure designs and associated data meet internal and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with project engineering, box/unit leads, department leadership, peer designers, and other engineering disciplines to develop control units and resolve technical issues.
- Lead small projects and processes assigned, while mentoring and reviewing the work of junior engineers and designers.
- Develop unit and module requirements using tools such as DOORS and SysML modeling platforms like Cameo, managing requirements through validation, change management, and tools such as Teamcenter and Polarion.
- Create schematic designs using Concept HDL and/or Mentor Graphics (Siemens EDA), participate in design reviews, and perform analyses including stress, stability, lightning, and performance evaluations according to department standards and customer specifications.
- Support the creation of Test Requirement Specifications (TRS) and production test solutions.
- Develop board-level and RTCA DO-160 test procedures for development and qualification testing.
- Plan and prepare procedures for development and qualification testing at both unit and system levels.
- Conduct testing using lab equipment and support off-site testing as needed.
- Document results of design studies, trade studies, and failure analyses.
- Provide technical support to manufacturing.
- Lead root cause investigations by collaborating across engineering teams, customers, and other groups to resolve technical issues.
- Address obsolescence of components in existing designs.
- Interface with off-site manufacturing facilities to resolve production challenges.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
Qualifications We Prefer
- Engineering experience with documented leadership responsibilities in product development, preferably in Electric Power Systems or similar systems.
- Experience working with process standards such as DO-160 and DO-254.
- Experience communicating technical information to stakeholders at multiple organizational levels, including preparation of reports, presentations, or technical documentation.
- Experience leading team projects, including mentoring or providing guidance to junior engineers.
- Experience applying structured problem-solving methods to engineering challenges, with measurable results.
- Experience preparing, monitoring, and executing program plans according to defined project goals, timelines, and deliverables.
- Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
