Key Responsibilities

The Senior Building Automation Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and maintenance of complex building automation systems for our commercial and industrial clients. This individual will serve as a technical lead on projects, driving innovation and providing expert guidance to both team members and clients.

Design & Engineering

Develop and review detailed designs, including system architecture, electrical schematics, and control logic, for building automation projects. Select appropriate Building Automation Controls Systems (BACS)- former defined as Direct Digital Control (DDC) hardware, field devices (sensors, actuators), and network components to meet project requirements and industry standards. Ensure designs comply with all relevant codes, including ASHRAE, LEED, BREEAM, Green Globals and local building codes.

Programming & Commissioning (Cold and Hot)

Program and configure BAS controllers and front-end user interfaces for systems like HVAC, lighting, and access control. Perform on-site commissioning and start-up to ensure systems are installed and functioning correctly according to the design specifications. Perform point-to-point checks, calibrate field devices, and optimize system performance.

Integration & Networking

Integrate various low-voltage building subsystems using standard industry protocols. Utilize BACnet (SC), Modbus, OPC-UA and other relevant communication protocols for seamless system communication. Set up and configure TCP/IP networks for building automation, including managing network security and access.

Troubleshooting & Support

Serve as the primary technical resource for complex issues related to controls, electrical systems, and network communication. Provide remote and on-site support to diagnose and resolve software and hardware problems.

Required Technical Skills & Tools

Building Automation Software: Expert-level proficiency with major BAS platforms, including but not limited to:

  • Johnson Controls Metasys
  • Siemens Desigo CC / Apogee
  • Tridium Niagara Framework
  • Honeywell Spyce / Trend
  • Automated Logic WebCTRL
  • Schneider Electric EcoStruxure
  • Emmerson Delta-V

Programming Languages & Protocols: Experience with control logic programming and various scripting languages. Expertise in BACnet (SC), Modbus, OPC-UA and other industrial communication protocols (e.g. PROFINET). Familiarity with web technologies (e.g., HTML, JavaScript) for user interface customization.

Design & Engineering Tools: Proficiency in AutoCAD for reviewing and modifying control drawings and schematics. Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) is a plus.

Networking: Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, subnetting, and network security concepts.

Field Tools: Proficiency with diagnostic tools, including multimeters, temperature probes, and network analyzers.
