Underwriting Specialist

To provide underwriting, technical support, assist in the development and management of a profitable business portfolio under the specified insurance class according to the company's guidelines and delegated authorities.

Your New Role

Strategy and Planning:

  • Contribute to the operational objectives of the underwriting function.
  • Assist in developing the annual business plan for the portfolio.
  • Participate in meetings to support strategy development.

Policy, Process and Procedures:

  • Perform underwriting activities in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Follow underwriting standards to manage risk and improve efficiency.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus:

  • Provide technical expertise to identify issues and opportunities.
  • Deliver timely and efficient service to brokers and clients.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with customers.
  • Monitor market trends to inform effective operations.

Technical Performance:

  • Assess risk for new business according to applicable standards.
  • Identify potential opportunities for new business and self-insurance prospects.
  • Develop measurement techniques and reporting systems.
  • Build knowledge related to legislation, best practices, underwriting criteria, systems, and organizational guidelines.
  • Participate in aggregate management and peer review processes.

People Management:

  • Support team motivation and development.

About You

  • Degree or equivalent qualification preferable.
  • Working experience with substantial experience gained within the General insurance industry.
  • Thorough understanding of class specific underwriting and procedure and insurance/reinsurance knowledge.
  • Ability to assess risk and use of risk profiling and pricing tools and loss models.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, interpersonal, communication, and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and use for decision-making.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Established customer/broker relationships would be an asset.
  • Strong level of numeracy and literacy skills would be an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant market conditions for specific class/portfolio would be an asset.
