Sylmar, CA

Are you a Tooling Design Engineer who is ready for your career to take flight? Look no further than PPG! We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Engineer who can use their experience to be an immediate impact on the Tooling/Engineering group.

The Aerospace Component Manufacturing - Tooling Design Engineer supports the design and development of tooling solutions that sustain production, improve cycle times, and assist in new product introduction (NPI) at our Sylmar, CA site. The primary focus is 3D CAD design, modeling, and engineering of tooling components, while also learning to manage multiple designs, jigs, fixtures, molds, and other tooling elements simultaneously. This role requires wearing multiple engineering hats—from upstream process review and defining technical requirements to downstream quality, inspection, tool validation, and buy-off. The position also emphasizes variable workflow management, task switching, and proper document and data control to ensure accurate, organized design outputs.

This role will work on-site at our Sylmar, CA facility and will report to the Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and tooling components in SOLIDWORKS, including jigs, fixtures, inspection tooling, forming molds, and related designs.
  • Support multiple design projects simultaneously, adapting to shifting priorities and variable workflow requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and act as a technical resource for upstream process review, defining tooling requirements and ensuring manufacturability.
  • Assist in downstream activities such as quality inspection tooling, tool validation, and production buy-off.
  • Maintain accurate document control, versioning, and engineering data management for all design packages and related documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, troubleshooting, and process evaluations to support continuous improvement.
  • Apply design principles to optimize tooling for ergonomics, efficiency, and process measurement capabilities.
  • Support senior engineers in mentoring technicians and implementing best practices in CAD and tooling design.

Core Requirements:

  • 2 or more years of experience in tooling, manufacturing engineering, or related technical/design roles required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS CAD software, including assemblies and 3D CAD modeling required.
  • Experience designing fixtures, molds, jigs, and tooling components, preferably in hard tooling (CNC, machining, welding) and soft tooling (fiberglass, carbon fiber, resin, 3D printing).
  • Only U.S. Citizens, Green Card holders, and political asylees or refugees are eligible to apply.

All offer amounts are dictated by length/breadth of applicable experience and current departmental pay equity.
